Ok... Remember I said that I was going to do a backyard 390 build for my boat!? Well.... It is underway! No pun intended LOL. I just ordered up a Comp Cam XE274H for it. So, I will be buying up parts a little at a time here. I'll do a big write up on it for you guys.Showing that you can have fun and do it on the cheap! Not all of us can afford top shelf stuff.

Got the springs from Earl H a few years back. So the springs are used but not for very long....

Stop by the machine shop and found out what the spring pressures where on the seat and open. About 130lbs on the seat and 330lbs open @ .575 lift. With a 1.76 Blue Racer roller tip rocker is what I will be using with POP's stands & end supports....

Without the inner spring @ .575 lift was 220lbs. So with that said. I will break in the cam without the inner spring then. I have to give it all the chances in the world to live!
Next, we will test the Rockwell hardness of the lifters from Comp Cams. See what happens here.....

Rob at blue Oval Performance hooked up another FE vendor up! I ordered up a set of Crower SPECIAL HI-LUBE HYD LIFTERS for this. They are shipped and I hope to see the stuff here next week sometime.

Wes, is that you in the boat?  How come you're not wearing your life jacket?   ;D  Looking forward to the build details...

Yep! That's me in the boat. I should be wearing one but it isn't required in California nor Oregon. ;D

As for the build.... Simple and easy LOL. Maybe a little head porting to do.....

Here is the cam and specs that I will be running in the boat. I will be using the Crower Lifters for a few reasons. They have a little harder face and a small flat spot on the side of the lifter. Allow a little more oil between the lifter and the cam.

For all you flat tappet cam guys. This is a must have tool for your FE toolbox!
It's a spring compressor that works on the heads if they are installed. Here is what's in the kit. The cool part is, it will take 750 pounds of spring pressure with no deflection. That is super cool!
Super nice kit! I will let you all know how it works out. Seems to be a very stout kit!

Hey...uh...Wes

Isn't a "hot FE" supposed to have a solid lifter cam?

Just bust'n yer balz from an old schooler!

I'm come'n your way in a couple of weeks. You up for a visitor?

I used that same spring compressor on mine a few months ago. Easily the best in car/installed head spring compressor for the FE. I loved it. :) Sorry, photos are low quality. One thing I will note, the rope did not work for me no matter how I tried, thus the air holder in the pic.

Hey Tommy-T! If I am in town.... You bet your bottom dollar! Would love to have you over. My plan is to hit Shasta Lake on the first big weekend in September. Blast me an email... Would you!?   HillsideAuto@charter.net Uncle is working on the Stang and hopes of dumping in the Poor Mans this coming Spring/Summer time. Stay posted!

Well.... All my solid roller cams I have is waaaay to big for this cheap thrill of a ride!  Don't think it would be a Family fun thing anymore at that point.

Hey Wes, do you know if that spring compressor works on the beehive springs?

Doug , it might! Do you have a width of the retainer? I can measure and see

I think it may be a little wide for a beehive or conical, but you could probably easily use a thick flat washer under the tool to make it work.

Well... We got the engine out and the heads off. Looks like it was running a tinge rich. Looks like someone had been in this engine once before. Pulled the #3 piston/rod. Bearing looks to be good! No scuffing on the piston. Looks like a ball hone job with fresh cast rings might be in order here.
Good thing it's being tore down. Little bit of water at one time was left in it. Corroded the bottom of a few lifters. I'll take pictures of some of it. Just to show you....
2 of my buddies helping me out with this. Chris (on the right) a old high school friend and Pappy (his call sign) Wes, my Vice Base Commander  giving me a hand with this.

So I pulled all the pistons/ rods out of this guy. Bearings still look really great in this engine. The pistons are on the tight side of the engine bore.
I started to look at all the cylinders and noticed on the number 6 hole that it got water in there some time ago. I also noticed the pistons are .020 over. So getting rings here on time would be a bear... I was planning on buying a new set of rings for this. But after seeing that cylinder and a couple others, I'll stick with the cast rings that I already have.
So as you can see I did some oil mods to the block. You look at the mains. Number 1, 2 and 4 the oil galley holes don't line up. Die grinder could fix this really easy. Also with the oil filter adapter there is another plate sandwich between the block and the oil filter adapter. You could see that I have rounded them for flow.
Next using an old cheesy ball hone and went to work on the cylinders... A lot of them cleaned up very nice and look really good. I used penetrating oil as I horned out the walls.
For the deck of the block. I used my super scrapers the clean up the deck. And followed up with using 80 grit sandpaper, I used a big long block sander. Remember this is a backyard build that you could do and in your own garage .

As you can see. I will be doing some oil mods to this. A little clean up

Did some more oil mods to the backyard build. It's getting a High Volume oil pump stuffed in this guy. Not that I need it but I have it already. It's a Milodon oil pump HV. So I'm going to put it to good use.

Here is a easy way on pulling oil galley plugs out of the block! Nothing fancy and it's kind of crude but it works. You should be able to dig this kind of stuff up out of your shop. It works extremely well. Pictures say a thousand words LOL

Here is the sandwich adapter for the oil filter adapter. Its a must have for my boat.

oil filter adapter. Before and after. This should help in the flow and maybe help in keeping the oil a little cooler

SPRING COMPRESSOR
I have one of these also. Nice piece. I still use my old thinner nylon rope though cause I can feed more in and with pop up pistons it tends to work its way in place and. Hold the valves up well. First time I seen that rope trick was when I was like 12. Pops was putting seals on the 390 66 galaxie.
Tim has some nice stuff. I got one of his stud girdles in the past. Made a few of my own since then, shushhh lol. Ill be using one on my build here soon.

Wes I presume your boat has got a raw water cooling system. In Florida my boat saw everything from fresh water - up river, to salt water - ocean. For one season I ran it raw and despite having zinc's everywhere the aluminum water passages of the Alum Edelbrock intake at the iron head were eaten big time.  Being a 460 and fairly easy to reach, I coated the entire water passage of the alum intake with a coat of epoxy (it was nicely bored oversize thanks to the corrosion).. This did work well. Worst I ever saw was a US Treasury Auction of a state of the art offshore race boat facility, they had two stacked high pallets of BBC Alum Race Heads that were all useless, their water passage ports at the head flanges were double sized corroded/eaten away.  Again these were from full race motors rarely long in the water heads.
Personally, I shelled out the big bucks and bought a closed loop system specific 460 to keep crud out of the my 460s coolant jackets - though I never saw one on a FE in a boat like yours, for that matter other then mine I never saw one in a Deep-V either.  I'm throwing out that in a boat anything made of aluminum flowing raw water in the path of electricity is short live'd.

Not too worried about it. That old Edelbrock timing cover shows a little bit of signs from that. My boat is fresh water only. No salt. The aluminum exhaust manifolds look great and same with the intake.

Your right BB but I don't put a ton of hours out on the boat ... It's lasted this long... I'm sure it will last my lifetime anyways LOL

Backyard 390 Build prep work.
Now for the cleaning after getting it back from the machine shop. All passage ways where scrubbed at the machine shop. So now it's time for some scrubbing of the bores and mains.
So I used Borax soap and hot water. It dissolved a half cup of the soap in a5 gallon bucket. I used a new toilet brush and a sponge to scrub out the boards with. To include the mains as well. Next I use compressed air to dry it off and then took some carb / choke cleaner with a blue towel and wipe out the borders. You could see the dirt on the towel and that's what you want to try to get out. And same with the mains.
Now that's all done it's time to file some rings. I have a set of cast rings. So for every inch of bore you have times .004 (so a min of .016)for the top ring and the second ring needs .005 to .0055 for every inch of bore sizes. So the first rings I set @ .020. The second is .021. I was lucky I didn't have to file the top rings to get the size. Now the second ring I had to file them to size. And I number them using a sharpie as you could see.
Now it's time for the crank. I wipe down all the bearings, crank and the saddles of the mains. You would be surprised the dirt that comes off of that. I checked it with using plastic gauge . I have about .002 Clarence. I did it in two separate spots (#1 main and #3 main)just to show. I go ahead and use the Lucas assembly lube. Linda crank in the mains. Houston 20-50 weight oil on the main bolts threads and underneath the heads. There torqued to 105 foot pounds. And check the end play of the crank. It's about .005~.0055. A little bit on the tired side but its very livable. Next step is painting the block

Backyard 390 Build paint job!
So I stop by Diamond Home Improvement and happened to pick up this Krylon Gloss basic blue. Happened to see this and thought it'd be a good idea to use this oil based enamel on the block and heads.
Personally it looks better in real than it does in the pictures. I think the pictures speak for themselves. Enjoy!

Degree time on the Backyard 390 Build.

So the pistons sit .025 down in the hole. I'm good with that! I want to run pump gas and being that its in a boat it will be under a full load all the time. Some good to go with composition head gaskets. I thought about going with the steel shamed head gaskets. But thats .020 thick when crushed. The Fel Pro gaskets .040 thick when crushed. So Fel Pro it is!

I checked my camshaft end play. Came out to .008. That's within spec and that's a GO! Next I checked the Milodon Gear drive back lash. They wanted .006~.008 between the idler gear and the crank gear. I came a fuzz over .006. Excellent!!!

Next is to degree the cam. Set the piston to TDC and my degree wheel too. Should check to make sure that it is dead nuts 0. So take the piston .100 BTDC and ATDC. Came up with 16 degrees on either side so now I know my degree wheel is dead nuts centered. So I check my intake centerline first. It was dialed in @ 105.5 and they wanted 106 so I'm a half a degree advanced. So that's .020 before max lift and .020 after max lift. You add those 2 numbers together and divided by 2.

So .020 before was 78° on the degree wheel and 133° after .020 max lift. Add them = 211 and devide by 2 = 105.5 intake center line.
Now by the numbers. So the .006 valve timing for open and close is 31BTDC and 63ATDC. I got 30°BTDC and 64°ATDC. I would say this cam is pretty much installed by the numbers they wanted!

I also found out that the lift they say it is isn't true! The intake and exhaust lift is the same! At the cam is .327 on both! So hydraulic rockers would come out to .565 or with adjustables would be .575 lift.
Next.... HEAD's! The lungs of the engine...

Backyard 390 Build.... Heads! The lungs...

So here they are. Didn't have the time I needed to do an outstanding job that I wanted for porting out the heads. I needed to get them to the machine shop before it closed for hunting. And I wanted this project up and running.

I just stuck with the 2.02 and 1.56 valves. The valves are brand new. New retainers and locks. New valve guides, harden exhaust seats. Intake seats where just fine. Valve springs are used.

The seat angles are 30°, 45° and 60°. Closed pressures are 145lbs a open is 345lbs. Close to what I wanted. The inner springs are not installed. Just because we need to break in the camshaft.

As you can see most of the valve... These heads should flow very well over stock. Wish I had time to flow those heads and spend a little more time on them. Not bad for a 3hr rush job. Sad to say... Enjoy!

Backyard 390 Build.... Knowing your rockers!

Ok... According to Crower Cams. They want a preload of .020- .060 on the lifter. Comp wanted .030 +/- .010. So the only way to find out is to Chuck it up and see. So we went a 1/4 turn to find out.

Every 1/4 was .010. That's what we needed to know. Perfect! 3/4 of a turn is what we needed to know.

For future situations like this, I'd use the thinner head gasket.  Having low compression and a .065" quench distance is a lot harder on the engine than having higher compression and .045" quench.

Also, "straight up" means that the LSA equals the ICL.  Your cam is not straight up, it's technically 4.5° advanced, according to your measurements.

Not trying to nit-pick, but a lot of guys get the terminology incorrect.

EDIT....just saw you had it running....nevermind.

Your right. The cam has 4 degrees advance in it and I added .5 to it. By the numbers they wanted. Didn't mean to confuse anybody. Sorry about that.

The reason why I didn't do steel shim gaskets is this thing is under a full load all the time (like being on a dyno) and I need to run pump 87 octane if I'm buying fuel at the lake. Didn't want to take a chance on that. Ran totally fine before, without issues. Felt like I would be taken a risk that I didn't want to chance. Otherwise I'm all for it.

Looks like lots of cracked intake valve guide bosses there Wes.

Yep. Common when you use bronze valve guide. Its one crack per guide. I prefer K-Liners myself... But I did those (installed them) years ago

Your build reminds me of when for $250-$600 I would have an extra 390 tire burner ready to go. Thanks for the post.

So before I shove the Pistons in the holes and torque down the rod nuts. I want to make sure that the boars were super clean. So I just used a little bit of all purpose oil on a blue rag and wiped out the bore again. Just to make sure. Little engine oil in the cylinder before I do so....

The rod bores are very clean as you can see. I installed the bearings in each 1/2. Used a little Lucas assembly lube. Torqued the cap (after a little engine oil on the threads ) to book spec. Since it had stock type rod bolt and nuts.

The pump on the left is the one that came out. That was my problem to begin with. The drive for the gear is recessed in from the top. Unlike the Milodon on pump on the right. It is a used HV pump but in really great shape. So I'm going to use it.
Also using this old Ford Motorsports intermediate shaft for the pump.

My stock pick up had a ton of crap in the screen... So I got a Milodon replacement. Cheap so to speak. Goes with the pump. I'm also using my windage tray too. I bought 2 non crush gaskets for the oil pan! One Milodon and one Felpro. Both great gaskets and don't leak!!! Hard to believe. Great deal and the P/N are pictured. Gasket sandwich the windage tray.

My oil pick up is .300 off the bottom of the pan. A 1/4" min and 3/8" max. So I'm kind of in the middle.
Heads are next. Pay attention to the gaskets! Front and backs. Just remember that the water jacket cut out goes to the back! I used a little engine oil on the threads and head of the bolts. I did them in sequence in started off with 30 foot pounds. Then 60, 90 for the final. You can do 100 if you like.

Next we will install the Crower lifters! Always clean off your new parts before install. This is proof on why you should! Little all purpose lubricant. Then a little Mopar lube on the face and Lucas assembly lube on the sides and tops of the lifters.

I also put the oil splash tray back in it. Don't really need too.... But since it came out I figured I'd put it back in. And yes the intake gasket is backwards and got turned the right way around. I used cork gaskets on the ends covered in Indian Head with black RTV on the ends.
Installed Jays intake adapter. As you can see that the ports match up with my ported heads very nicely! The push rods are from Proform. Made in the USA!!! Not a bad push rod for unnder $100. Same thing. Clean them up before use. Little assembly lube in the cups or engine oil.

Installed the rockers. Just make sure the skinny bolt goes in #3 and #6 cylinder. Otherwise no oil to the rockers. I had to use thick washers under the stands to get the rockers centred on the valve steam. I used the splash shields for the valve springs. Adjusted the rockers and set the pre load to .030 on the lifter. 3/4 of a turn. I used the rock over method to set the pre load.
Had to cut the crap for the 4V 351C Intake to go on. I'll have to clean it up later. The crank spacer we cut down .250 because of the gear drive and the water pump in the way.

So before I start it up. I added 5 qrts non detergent 30 weight oil and a bottle of Crane break in lube. Set the distributor in @ 14° BTDC. So I know that I'll have 36° total! You don't need fancy oil to break in a new camshaft.

I ran it for 30mins between 2,200~2,600rpms. Nice thing when using a electronic pump. Give it 10 seconds. Pump it 3 or 4 times. Fire in the hole! Everything went very smooth and off with a hitch.

Once the break in was done. I played with it a little bit. Shut it off and back in the shop.
Pulled the rockers off and installed the inner springs. I like using compressed air to do the job. Better then I like the rope myself.

FWIW, I can usually swap out springs when we do a flat tappet breakin without air or a rope either one.  If the piston is at TDC and you're using the FE on-head spring compressor, it's not a bad job.  A little pen magnet will help hold the valves up if the seals won't keep them up.

You can make a map of companion cylinders....

1542
6378

....then you can bring #1 to TDC, change the springs, hop over to #6, change springs, rotate crank 90°, change springs on #5, then hop over to #3 and change, rotate crank 90°, hop over to #4, etc, etc.  Helps to save a little time.

Great job on the motor, Wes!  When do we get to see a shot of the boat with the big roostertail behind it?  I'm pretty fired up to see that... 8)

Jay there isn't one LOL. It's a prop job. But I will get a video of it here soon! Glad it got you fired up! Still tuning and tweaking on it. I got another video for you and I'll post it. It might get your blood pressure go in a little more than what it is lol

Brent, that is a great way to do that! I thought about that myself. But didn't do it.... Probably because I was running on fumes and  I was very tired. LOL I did have a little helper that night.....

Jay, I hope to take out the boat again this Friday and get some video of it. But I got to get my secondary on the carb to open up.... Got a lighter spring in it (Yellow) , second to the lightest spring. We will see....

Good luck Wes.  By the way, I always seem to end up with those yellow springs in the secondary diaphram too...
