Title: Edelbrock Performer RPM Cam?
Post by: jholmes217 on December 23, 2014, 10:30:16 AM
I don't know anyone other than Jay Brown (saw that it was the cam used in the 428 CJ dyno mule in his book) that has experience running this cam.  How is the idle (choppy, rough, mild) and did it pull hard from 1500 to 6500 RPM like Edelbrock says?  How was it for vacuum for power brakes?

Not a great cam, in my opinion.  I don't think it has enough vacuum for power brakes, but it may be close; seems to me it ran about 8-10 inches at idle on the dyno.  With hydraulic lifters and Edelbrock's springs, it peaks on the dyno at about 5300 RPM, then falls off fairly rapidly.  In the car I ran it to 6000 RPM and it seemed to be fine, but there's no way to measure horsepower in the car.  Seemed to pull OK down low.  Idle was fairly rough, about the same as the Comp 294S cam that I have in the engine now.

Thanks Jay.  Sounds like I will stick with the Oregon Cams version of a Magnum 280H.

I like mine, didn't like the Comp 280H in my sled puller. In all fairness, when it was a daily driver it was fine. Drag racing, sand drags and sled pulling it floats at 6000-6200 rpm. The RPM will rev to 7k with a light sled, seems to pull hard to about 5800 with a heavy sled. It likes a lot of initial timing at idle. I have mine at 900 rpm, 21* initial and 12 inches of vacuum. I run a 3k stahl converter so I can't vouch for any power under that rpm, but pulls good from there.

Diddo on what Wes said on the cam , i run a comp but its not an off the shelf , i had it custom ground .. so use an oregon or even have them do a custom grind for , for your setup .. Bud
