Title: So, I had a Bad Day a couple of months ago
Post by: rockittsled on December 10, 2014, 12:21:14 AM
I was up in North Carolina for a contract and had to come back to Jax for a VA apt. Drove back with no problems, took a nap, got up and headed to Southside for the appt. I was coming up on the Baymeadows exit when "CRACK!KNKNKNKNKNKNKNK!!!" I took the exit and made it to the Gates gas sta, jumped and popped the hood to look at the exhaust manifolds(I knew one was cracking, I thought it had broken) and noticed a growing puddle of oil underneath the engine. I hollered at my wife to shut the engine down and looked under and saw a hole in the oil pan!  After we got towed back to the house, it had cooled down for me to stick my finger in the hole and felt lots of chunks, including a rod bolt still attached to part of a rod, and the oil pump driveshaft. Got online and found a 360 in Crystal River, FL for $250 on CL. Got up Sat morning to go get it, got there and recognized the blue F100 4x4 from the FTE forum in the Bump side. (I do not remember his avatar name, unfortunately, but I am pleased with my engine) Had to go back to NC to work for another month, but I finally got back down here to put the engine in to my truck at the NAS Jax Auto Skills Center

Installing the 360

The post mortem pics.  The really sad part is this engine had never been apart.   Nope, it still had the nylon toothed timing gear, 410 marked pistons, shim gasket and Ford marked bearings and no ridge on the cylinder walls, I polished off the carbon with a Scotchbride and it was almost smooth

So, an observation or two on the dead 390
1 I had assumed that my truck has 264000+miles, not the PO stated 164000, based on the rust on the body, tightness of the front suspension with the radius arm brackets bolted rather than riveted on, bad Ujoints, and other things ie a work truck that was well taken care of until it was parked.
2 The truck was sold in WA, spent time in CA (CARB Engine swap sticker on the door jamb to a 360), then ended up in Lake City, FL working on a ranch
3 The engine had been swapped back to a 390 before I had gotten it, but I figured that since the timing cover and intake manifold both showed signs of silver paint, someone had already been in it and had rebuilt it

If I would have known it was still untouched, I would have looked for another eng and put a simple rebuild on that to run with, and rebuilt the one in it with all the glory parts

Wow, nothing like a little shrapnel to wreck your day  :(  Nice recovery with the 360, though.  Glad to hear the truck is back on the road.

That oil pump drive shaft looks like an Allen wrench!   ;)

BruceS, that's funny! Maybe not for everyone,  but made me laugh ;D. My old 12 to one 390 would bend pushrods about once a summer. We had one so bent we had to pull it out of the pushrod hole with a claw hammer. My buddy said it looked like a roaches leg! Anyway glad the old girl is back up and running.

Sorry to see this, especially on a good running engine.
I had something similar happen to me when I was a kid. Traveling home late one night all I heard was a KATHUNK, then nothing. Got out to see a puddle of oil under the car so I towed it home.

In the daylight I saw a hole in the pan, part of the skirt missing...and then I spotted it, the main cap wedged between the block and motor mount. After tearing it down it was obvious that the cap came off and the crank sent it flying. After closer inspection, I noticed there was corrosion on one of the main cap bolts where it broke, but the other was clean and shiney where it broke. The engine had never been apart, so it must have been a flawed bolt from the factory. Somehow that one bolt had held the cap in place for who knows how long before it finally gave way. Amazing.

Yeah, it wasn't too funny at the time......but, I guess I am a more philosophical about it now  ???  Heck, I might even put it my toolbox at work..... if I ever had to use it because that is the only one that would fit, that would be ROFLMAO funny

You'll probably have to have that rod rebuilt! :o

Dang man, that sux.  Been there though and as others stated, good recovery.  The pics of the hobby shop bring back memories of when I was a young airman!

My Dad was in the USAF so I got to help take care of our 72 F-250 CS, (which I was planning on it being MY first car when I turned 16 until the cab mounts rusted out  :'( ) at Castle AFB, other vehicles and my first car (a 69 Mustang GT) at Sheppard AFB, and that and my first truck (a 55 F-100) at Beale AFB.  Fortunately, my wife is retired USAF, so I get to go again when needed
