http://bangshift.com/bangshiftapex/monday-morning-soundtrack-vintage-trans-racers-watkins-glen/
Lots of Boss 302 'Stangs. Roof, inside and track videos make this one of the best road racing vids I've seen of real racers. The roof mounted vids are really terrific. Btw, get some popcorn as it's a 24 minute reel.
-
I've watched most of these Historic Trans Am race videos.....and they're fun to watch. Really neat to see the real cars getting out there and being flogged. I always thought that Trans Am racing would be more fun than drag racing, but the cost is even more prohibitive and there is only one track near me, although it is a biggie since it's Mid Ohio.
-
I went to the vintage races at Watkins Glen this year, the Trans Am class wasn't as big as the 2013 edition when it was the featured class, but it was still very good racing and great to see "real" cars versus the tube chassis stuff you see now. They run VERY hard in that class, great to see them leaning on the cars, everything from Cobras to Boss to GT350s to big block Vettes....
-
I am a big fan of Trans Am stuff.I am just finishing my 67 replica and look forward to running it through its gears..

Cool! Looks like a period correct engine. Specs?
-
Very nice, Cory. I've been waiting to see more about this build. Looks like a well built one.
-
Looks great 427! And a great video as well, thanks for posting it machoneman. I'm into the old T/A stuff as well, one day this puppy will hit the track again!

Vic and Camee got a little competitive at The Point. Note the sticker on the spoiler- Camee also drives an R-Model in B/P

Say, Lovehammer, did you build that wicked, period correct aluminum front spoiler. Man, I have wanted one for my '70 'Stang as, no kidding, with the flexy black plastic lower, my car definitely floats at high speed. Scary at times too.
-
I spent a lot of time trying to get the look I am after...The "R" model gas tank is pretty much unobtainium so I built my own.I put all the factory heater delete and radio delete stuff in because you just never see it.I just built it for fun but it got carried away.I swore I wasn't going to put it on my rotisserie and I ended up putting it up twice...
As far as the engine goes....Its a 1967 289 with typical parts in the short block other than the Avaid oil pan and Boss 302 windage tray.Heads are 67 with some dremel work stuffed with 1.9 and 1.6 valves.Cam is a comp hyd roller with all the associated goodies that go with it...
Intake is a old F-4B with a Holley 3310 on it...I was on ebay looking at something and in a unrelated picture I saw the original valve covers.I contacted the owner and he sold them to me along with the spacers to clear my roller rockers.Covers had the original CS decals on them...I removed (and saved) the decals and put Holman Moody ones on.
Trans is a W/R toploader with a very obscure finned top cover.
Rear is a 9" narrowed to 65/66 specs and has a traction lock with 3.73 gears.I stole the 10x2 1/2 rear brakes off the 68 for this car..
Front suspension is another story for later..
I like the hand built spoiler on the Boss car....what kind of wheels are those ???
I may build another one after I put the 427 car back together.I'm thinking a 68 with a Boss engine as I doubt I could find a tunnel port 302..

Finished....Just need to swap the rear tires and wait for the good weather..Car is running but trapped in the shop...
Focusing on the 427 car now....Camera doesn't like the shop lighting......Cory

Nice Hot Rod!
The finned cover is a Ford piece?
-
their model year". " This gets me when the cars are decades different/upgraded in numerous components.. I saw many of the shown T/A cars on the video up close at the Amelia Island Concours. One thing that caught my eye was the use of very narrow leaf springs and high numerical stacking of the leaves to regain the spring pressure from the loss of spring width. I thought it was a cool way to tuck in an extra inch or so of rubber under the rear-end of Mustangs. The sway bars were all likewise heim jointed and adjustable, very much modern race car style.
I noted the rear-suspensions springs/shocks/sway bars etc regardless of Mfg nameplate were all duplicates of each other. It looked like all the T/A cars were built in the same shop. One only needs the BOSS 302 Chassis Manual sold over the Ford Parts Counter to confirm not much remains of how they did it back then. The motors I presume are likewise addressed. Cool cars and all but about the only thing that remains original is the body shell, paint color and decals.
-
The original Boss cars used narrow springs and some of them had very unique rear end assemblys. As with all racing lots of cheating was going on and no two cars were the same...The Pontiac cars ran chev 302's.Alot of the Pontiacs used Camaro sheetmetal as well...Mustangs hid override traction bars under the rear seat.Camaro's had the subframes moved.....it goes on and on.
They have all been upgraded as far as engine, brakes and ign goes..They still race them in vintage racing and that's all I care. They are out of my price range...
I just built the car for fun...
No idea who made the finned cover..
-
The aluminum toploader cover is a Jerico part. I'm not sure if they still make that cover.
The narrow Trans Am springs were sourced from a early Fairlane I think.
What size/brand of wheels & tires did you manage to stuff under the car?
-
Interesting about the Fairlane springs..I will have to look at that..The cover does look like a Jerico but I cant confirm it.
My front wheels are 15x6 with M/T sportsman tires 26x10...The rear wheels are 15x7 that I added another inch to the inside (now 15x8) with 28x12 M/T tires, the width clears (barely)but the diam is to much.I will switch them to 26x12's.I also narrowed the nine inch housing to 65/66 specs....Its a very tight fit but its the look I was after....Cory
-
Tomorrow I dig out a Jerico cover I have laying around and take a picture of it. And I'll measure some springs too, there's a set of early Fairlane springs somewhere.
-

I can't take all the credit for it. A friend over on the B302 forum sent me a template, so all I had to do was cut it out. I don't know where the template is anymore but I'll be pulling this spoiler soon and If you want I can make another template for you.
Steve
-
Well I'm still messing with the pictures of the Jerico cover but I did measure the width of the springs. A 64 Fairlane spring is 2" wide and Mustangs are 2 1/2" wide.

Sure, would love to have a cardboard or heavy paper template, one I could have a shop use to fab up a duplicate.

My understanding is that you cannot race in the SVRA without the car having a real history with provenance, correct? Is that where you are going with this car? If not, then where?
-
You are probably correct...I cant afford to race the vintage race classes anyways..Building it was just a idea I came up with 10-12 years ago.
I honestly built it just for fun...I enjoy hunting down parts and just being different.
Car is street legal.I am up in BC Canada...the historic tracks are a long ways away..
-
They are pretty liberal at the vintage races that are held at Pacific Raceways over the 4th of July weekend. There is a green 67 fastback that I have seen run there for several years that is more of a street car than yours.

Where did you get the U-joint cap?
-
U-Joint cap ????? elaborate...
-
Oh sorry, I was looking at it wrong. :-[
-
Pictures of Jerico top cover and a stock steel top cover.
-
Certainly looks like it....I bought it off e-bay.Seller claimed it was magnesium but it was not...I didn't pay much for it..I always plug the vent hole in the lid and relocate it to the tailshaft so it worked out fine..
(http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm220/427Fastback/cover_zpsa0d5e133-1.jpg) (http://s297.photobucket.com/user/427Fastback/media/cover_zpsa0d5e133-1.jpg.html)
-
Not to be too critical or an insufferable nay-bob, but I was taught to not use grease-able u-joints in a performance application, and if you do - rotate the u-joint so the grease nipple is on the compression side of the rotation. The grease port hole creates a fracture location and grease-able joints have holes drilled inside.
-
You are correct but when I ordered the HD joints that is what I got.At least its not the ones where they drill a hole through the bearing cap...I have a fairly stout engine but I doubt its any where near the HP levels of the race cars.
-
Here are the 26x12 M/T's stuffed under the back of the car.Wheels are 15x8..Lots of clearance for lots of work....Winter is still here, for now the car now will sit under its cover...Cory

What's up with the POS minivan? ;)

Steve, I noticed the FPS sticker on the windshield , I wondered where my Ronel R9's went off my 85 Mustang. Hows the mig welder working?

Great work, it's video time (with plenty of volume 8)). So yeah, the mini van is for trips to the airport and you don't drive it ever, but what's that sleeping under the tarp in the add-a-lean-to shed?
-
The mini van is now gone..Mary got her Ranger back...Sleeping under the tarp next to my shop is my 1964 Falcon 2dr post.It is a empty shell that's been blasted and primed.Someone has already put a Heidts crossmember in it so I am wide open on engine options but more than likely getting a 351C that I already have.I have most of the parts for it.Hiding away next to the water barrels by the mini van is my 1936 Diamond T truck. My 68 Fastback is on its side in the shop getting ready for paint.....Cory

Hey Lance, yup that's me but I've lived in south GA since 03. That little "L-Tech" mig was stolen by a shitheel here about 05. That did give me an excuse to go buy a new Lincoln though. ;)
I think I got the Ronals from Rusty back in the 90s sometime.

Here is an underhood shot of my current 68.

LMAO!! You guys kill me. ;D
The car looks awesome! Nice attention to detail and it all just jives together really nicely. That Diamond T looks fantastic as well! They look like they have a chopped top from the factory. When most vehicles looked sleeker when chopped, Diamond got the roof height just right on those rigs.
Nice post.
-
Thanks....Diamond T's are in a class all by them selves. My dad bought the truck in 1968,i inherited the truck in 1988.The resto and build is my work.As soon as I finish the fastback the Diamond T is coming into the shop to finish it..
