Title: Let the cutting begin......
Post by: 66FAIRLANE on November 20, 2014, 06:28:56 AM
Made a start on a new project today. I will post photos as I go and people can have a go at guessing if they want. So for now it's the 'mystery project' :)

Nothing like a new machining project to get the blood pumping LOL!  Looking forward to further hints on the project...

It's gonna be a cardboard box! Obviously, the pattern is right there...

I'm guessing in the 10 wide 24 long and about 1 thick.

2nd guess: carb spacer

Pretty large.  I am guessing a bracket for the front of the engine.  Holds the A/C and alternator?

Yeah that's some pretty honkin' plate!  You'll be turning those cranks for a while  :o

I'm thinking engine front mount plate (one side?)

Now that's a great guess, and in keeping with the upcoming seaon :).  A fairly stout tree would be required.

How about the beginnings of a girdle or variation thereof?

Maybe a set of rods!  Or a license plate holder... or pretty much anything in between at this point.  Need another clue!

Smaller pieces indeed, an astute observation.  I am forced to kinda side with Wade, might just need another clue... ???

Its going to be a bit of a lengthy one so don't expect updates too often.

Well, there were 7 dwarfs (correct?). I'll bet they work pretty cheap as they can't reach high enough to set things on counters but they can set stuff on a chunk of billet.

So, if each one brought a bearing to you and three went back for the other three, paying $0.50/bearing shipping and handling I suppose it works out to $3.50.  Other than that I got nothin'.  I'm just wondering what dwarfs are doing in what is obviously shaping up to be one helluva Christmas story.

Still haven't figured out why they sleeved 'em though...........

Throttle body!  That's a good guess, especially with the throttle shafts requiring small bearings...

Im still going with an accessory plate for the front of the engine.  Small bearings could be for various idler pulleys and such....   :D

Heo is on the money! Going to have a go at making two throttle bodies using Holley 600 throttle plates. Going to need to buy a boring head and its going to take some time on my little mill but I need some excuse to get out in the shed. That large block of ally will get cut in half and do two.

Base plate progress.

Reminds me of a quote from Lil' John Buttera, published in Hot Rod many years ago.

HR:  "How do you machine a billet aluminum side mirror?"
Buttera:  "You just start with a big chunk of aluminum and machine away everything that doesn't look like a mirror!"

Anyone else think these holes might be a bit small to feed an angry FE? That's a 600 gasket by the way. Holes at 27/32.

It was a humid one here today. 8pm it was 28C and 70% humidity in my shed and the only way I had to cut this in half was a hacksaw. I was saturated with sweat. I now have the holes at 1-1/16. Not the prettiest but the mill will fix that and the cheap Chinese boring head has arrived.

A little more progress last night. Tidied up my sublime hacksawing and took the two TB's down to the same height.

(http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac109/newmanandy/20150113_193134_zps1e49a5fd.jpg) (http://s890.photobucket.com/user/newmanandy/media/20150113_193134_zps1e49a5fd.jpg.html)

(http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac109/newmanandy/20150113_201408_zpsf1d865af.jpg) (http://s890.photobucket.com/user/newmanandy/media/20150113_201408_zpsf1d865af.jpg.html)

Then spotted through the base plates and drilled and tapped to accept.

(http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac109/newmanandy/20150113_220623_zps8522cce3.jpg) (http://s890.photobucket.com/user/newmanandy/media/20150113_220623_zps8522cce3.jpg.html)

Base plate bolted on. Have to pick up the rough throat holes and whack em through the base plate. I am at 1-1/16 at the moment. I have a 1-1/4 drill but I can't hold it as it is MT4. I might turn it down to MT3 and if that works from there I can use the boring head and sneak up on 1-9/16.

Well, this is going to require something I don't have much of (and can't buy on ebay), patience!

I need to take out 1/2" with the boring head! Ah well....suppose I have the time. Did one hole last night and it came up pretty good. Now it is set up I can just do one whenever I feel like it.

Didn't really bother about exact hole positions when I roughed out the holes. Its a bit more critical now.

Clocking it up square

Only done one at this stage and will probably concentrate on it until finished. Next thing is disassemble and rough cut the corners off of the top and clock up in a 4 jaw chuck (hope it fits!) and turn the air cleaner seat. Then bore holes in base plate for throttle shafts.

Definitely, but it gets me out of the house and having a quiet tipple in the shed. Just always wanted to make one for some reason. Now I'm making two.

Title: Re: Let the cutting begin......

A little more progress.
Decided to put a 'lead in' on the throats and settled at 10 degrees. Had to clock up each one in my 4 jaw chuck to get centre and then slowly does it as I was only holding with 2 jaws. The body was offset so far that one of the jaws would hit another before contacting the job.

Clocking up
(http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac109/newmanandy/20150211_204130_zps63cd745e.jpg) (http://s890.photobucket.com/user/newmanandy/media/20150211_204130_zps63cd745e.jpg.html)

Slowly does it
(http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac109/newmanandy/20150212_193631_zpsb8ad0f91.jpg) (http://s890.photobucket.com/user/newmanandy/media/20150212_193631_zpsb8ad0f91.jpg.html)

Two done for comparison
(http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac109/newmanandy/20150211_220917_zps18c62e45.jpg) (http://s890.photobucket.com/user/newmanandy/media/20150211_220917_zps18c62e45.jpg.html)

All 4 done
(http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac109/newmanandy/20150212_195033_zps677ad3f0.jpg) (http://s890.photobucket.com/user/newmanandy/media/20150212_195033_zps677ad3f0.jpg.html)

Now to work out how to bore a long straight hole for the throttle shafts. Hmmmm.............
Title: Re: Let the cutting begin......
Post by: Heo on February 12, 2015, 07:23:39 PM
Nice job. There is special drills for long holes.Gun drills
but.....they dont work there since you got the throtle
bore there...If you bore undersize and index carefully
and use a loong reamer with the right size
Title: Re: Let the cutting begin......
Post by: jayb on February 13, 2015, 08:00:07 PM
You could maybe use some brass sleeves for the shaft, and drill the holes for the sleeves slightly oversize, then epoxy them in place while a straight throttle shaft is used to align them.  Let the epoxy dry with the throttle shaft in place and you should be good to go.

Very instructional! I believe Jay does that sort of thing by holding a beaver by the hind legs and persuading it to gnaw on the aluminum. ;)

Drill it then ream it. Hold the reamer in your mill and you should be able to get it pretty square.
Title: Re: Let the cutting begin......
Post by: 66FAIRLANE on February 16, 2015, 06:16:38 PM
I have a plan but it doesn't involve a reamer. Remember the outer shafts are on bearings which will seal them. I just have to make sure the middle where it passes through the throats doesn't leak too much. As I am using stainless shafts I think a Teflon bush might be in order in this spot. It will stop the stainless 'picking up' on the ally, seal up and I can offset to take out any small misalignment I might have. That way I can attack the outers from each side with a clearance hole and bearing counterbore then spot through for the middle which will become the oversize hole for the Teflon bush.

Not set on it. Still thinking....more than one way to skin a cat.

What you propose is doable.  The teflon bush concept works fine on all Whipple's marine dual throttle bodies.  They also start as castings with the throttle bores already there. - Garrett
