Title: Mechanical water pump for 500+ cubes

So I'm close to building my stroker and I just realized I haven't considered my water pump. What do I need here? This is uncharted territory for me. I've found a few old threads where stock pumps supposedly worked. That would be good for me because I'm almost out of fun bucks. But with a lot more cubic inches than stock it seems like I would need more than a stock pump. Whatever I settle with has to be mechanical. Cylinders are siamese if it matters. Pulleys are early 70's truck diameters. What do I need guys? Edit: sometimes street driven also.

For sure an Edelbrock pump will work up to 900+ horsepower.  I imagine a stock pump would work up to at least 600, but have usually gone the Edelbrock route, so I don't have any personal experience.  No problems with the stock pump at 500 HP, that's for sure...

I have a dove aluminum pump I bought 18 years ago and love it. Dropped the temp 30° in my old 12 to 1 390. Paid 250$. Have a cast iron evans on my 406, paid 170$. Jury is still out on that one though.

WerbyFord did a test on the "other" forum. Below is a link. He was using a mild engine, but I think the general info would transfer. I agree with him, pulley's can be as important as the pump.

Werby's testing is what got me to thinking about using a stock FoMoCo pump. But his test platform was a mild 390. Not a 500+ ci engine. I suspect his findings would be dramatically different if he used a much higher HP engine for testing. For my deal I would rather error on the side of caution and run a high. volume pump.
Well... I better get busy and dredge a few bucks out of the wife's purse.  ::)
