Title: newbie help with 68 Monterey
Post by: GTXtreme19 on June 24, 2014, 12:13:42 PM
Hi fellas and ladies,
I just bought a 68 Monterey 390 car for $800 (its not in my possession yet, don't want to drive 30 miles with a bad exhaust, and carb puking fuel.) Anyway back to the point, the passenger side exhaust manifold is cracked in 4-5 places. As much as I'd love to put some beefy headers on it I don't have the $500 to spend on them right now. So what are my options for the factory manifold? Will other vehicle manifolds fit it? What should I be looking for.

And for you picture whores

Finding a replacement manifold shouldn't be that difficult, but getting the old one off could be a pain.  Expect that at least a couple of the top bolts with break off and need to be drilled out and retapped.  The face of the exhaust flange may be eroded and may not seal well.  I hate working on old rusty exhaust!

Thanks for the heads up fellas. I'll keep my eyes peeled. As far as the rust issue I've found a good spray of atf and acetone 1:1 mix works quite well on freeing up seized rusty bolts. My biggest concern is another area of the exhaust cracking when I remove the manifold
