Hello,
I have a Robert pond Aluminum SOHC block which is basically a side oiler block. I would like to know if the old Oil pressure relief valve is necessary anymore, or has this issue somehow been addressed on blocks that are not OEM?

An oil pressure relief valve is found inside the rear of the block along the driver's side. The passage associated with this valve as well as the main gallery are pluged on the rear face of the block.

As soon as I posted, I had a thought. Where Jay has inserted "Squirters" on each SOHC head would be essentially a pressure relief valve. If too much pressure builds, you will just get a stronger stream from each squirter. Thoughts?

The squirters will not function as a pressure relief valve; they just act like a small leak in the oiling system. Also, my Pond blocks have both been drilled for the factory pressure relief valve, but they have not been needed because the opening between the side oiler gallery and the hole for the pressure relief valve is not open on my blocks. I would think that all Pond blocks are this way. I think if you wanted to use a pressure relief valve in the Pond blocks you could, but you would have to open up a slot between the side oiler gallery and the hole for the pressure relief valve.
Since all the stock and aftermarket oil pumps have a pressure relief valve built in, you can certainly get by without using the pressure relief valve in the block.

I have not used a factory relief valve in any of the aftermarket blocks we've assembled.

Perfect! I did not necessarily want to use one, but in reading an article on the Side Oiler block, I wanted to ensure it was not needed.... didn't want to get it put together and then find out it was needed. Thank you Jay and Barry. I am going to Start my SOHC build thread today on this site! Im super excited. Thanks again!
