Is there a book I can get to see if a Fairlane is a original s-code and what options it may have come with Thanks for any help Dave

The serial number will have a "S" in the serial number. For instance, a 66 Fairlane GT hardtop manufactured in Kansas City will have a serial number that starts with 6K40S.....
You can get a Marti Report if your car is a 67 or later; nothing available for 66s except for the info on the door dataplate.

Thank you its a 66 4spd car and has the S in vin 390 hope its a good 1 its In pieces but body work is suppose to be done. Whats it worth supposed motor was done as well new interior etc

The 5th digit is the engine code , s is a 390 and you can get a marti report on your car from Dave Marti , he s in Az and has all the ford data and you can get it all from him.. Bud

Thanks Guys I may pass on this car its seems all there but it has all 4 floor pans replaced and 1/4s torque boxes as well it is completely apart, I am afraid that without seeing the doors and trunk on it I wont know if they did a proper resto and when the doors etc don't fit and the body need to be cut back apart I wont have the money to do it so it w be a chance and idk if I am willing to take it.. Any thoughts I appreciate it..

Being S code means it's a GT and those are all a hardtop or convertible. No other Fairlanes or sedans got the S engine they had a Z as top option.
Replacing floorpans can affect door fit. On a hardtop it isn't usually a problem but a convertible really needs the doors in place to be left in place to be sure they fit while doing the floors. Just a brace across the door jamb can lead to surprises later.

Thank you for info Much appreciated. I thought i was right but wasnt sure aboout code. I am very concerned thta floors where done and door alignment etc will not be correct as the car is a shell no doors or trunk on it and fenders just hung. I would hate to buy ot and then find out it needs to be cut back up I know nothing about body work... It is a GT 4spd has a 390 not sure if it is numbers matching. Been wanting a 66 or 67 for a long time but never first priority, but its sure is surfacing to the top latley. The 32 is fun to drive but on certain days i would like soemthingelse. Thanks for the help

Vise decision to not buy it. I did a lot of bodywork in the
80-90s ,And i have seen many Fairlanes bent in front
of the rockers from tqbox repairs.
And they often had the door or the fenders not hung,
And bought cheap beacuse the previous owner got "tired of it"
All the rust fixed.Just hang and adjust door and fenders and
paint it......yeeaaahhh right
And when you gave them a estimate for fixing it they asked if i was crazy
Its only to adjust the doors and fenders(and thats after they tried to adjust
them for a couple of weeks)

Agree with Heo completely. Now in the process of putting the finishing touches on what was originally a 67 Comet Cyclone H-code (upgraded to S-code status) I'm extremely glad that I started with a car that was in one piece and complete -- albeit very rough. I'm by no means a master bodyman, but bolstered by the confidence of a previous build and armed with the Ford/Mercury intermediate body and assembly manuals and a good digital camera to take lots of photos, jumped right in. It turned out to be a MUCH bigger challenge than I ever anticipated and, quite frankly, without the experience of the dissassembly I don't think I would have been able to finish it.
But then again, some folks thrive on complicated jigsaw puzzles.
Another thing, there are nice driver 66-67 FE-powered intermediates that come up for sale/auction from time-to-time, and not usually with Mopar/Chevelle SS/Shelby-crazy prices. On the topic of auctions, and notwithstanding the reality TV and B-J hype, it strikes me that a lot of the concours restoration auction cars end up going for well below the cost of their restoration -- the big clue is when the commentators use that priceless expression "Well bought!" Anyhow, an option potentially worth exploring if you're committed tyo having an FE-powered intermediate.

Thanks for the assurance guys I let it go it went out west, guy drove out from michigan and bought it. I have been doing some research and talking to some good resto shops and have got up to speed on what it takes to do the work right and im not in the position to do that right ;) I probably will find a driver and go that route. I found a 64 galaxie with a really nice body and frame that doesnt beed any rust repair. Has had 1 repaint 40 years ago and is mostly original. Thanks again

Decades ago/70s I was privy to a body shop that would take two high end wrecks (Porsche MBs) one front end and one rear end and make one. I really don't think it was illegal in those days but often thought back on it - did not seem that tough to cut two cars apart and make one if everything was cut LOL spliced back perfectly.
