Title: What rockers to use with a solid roller and Survival Heads?
Post by: LuxurySportCoupe on March 05, 2014, 06:32:32 PM
Hi guys,
On my upcoming 445 build, I'm leaning toward a rather aggressive solid roller cam (I'm thinking custom comp with #4877 or #4878 lobes, 260 and 266@.050). I'm also thinking of going with a set of Survival heads and T&D rockers. My question is, would a cam like this require too much spring pressure for the street T&D's? And would the Survival heads require the same machine work for the race T&D setup as the edelbrock heads do?

That's a pretty big street cam.  Is this for the car in your photo?  If you plan on driving it a lot one step smaller might be better. With a 260*/266* cam,  a 4500+ stall converter for your C6 will probably be needed for best performance.

With the springs needed for a solid roller, the good T+D rocker setup that needs the minor machining to the head is the way to go. (The Comp 943 or 955 springs depending on the installed height should work pretty well for that cam which should give 230-240lbs on the seat and 580-600lbs or so open.)
It uses five head bolts to hold the rocker stand in place (instead of the stock four 3/8" bolts) and it's really convenient to be able to take off two rocker arms at a time with no pressure on them.

Thanks for the pictures! Yes, this is going in my Galaxie, I was leaning towards that cam to help get my DCR down to a pump gas friendly level. The primary purpose of the car will be about 2,000 miles a year of hard street driving and a few trips to the track per year. The C6 won't be staying in the car for long, as soon as funds allow (hopefully next year), I'll be doing a manual trans swap.

I have a high lift hydraulic roller cam, and high pressure beehive springs. After doing a lot of research the T&D race rocker could handle the highest lift and highest spring tension. They are also the lightest of the bunch so you will ultimately cause less float above 6500. All those factors sold me, they are pricey but a nice set up so I felt they were worth it........Jon

Thanks for the advice guys. Piece of mind in worth the extra money to me, so I'll go with the race set then.

I would either go with the race set, or make provisions for strength on the street set.  The weak link is the combination of spring pressure and rocker studs that go into aluminum.  I've pulled them out with 625 lbs open....not a fun thing to do.

Brent, could you explain what you mean by making provisions for strength on the street set?

You could take the helicoils out and put it bigger solid inserts like the EZ-Loks.  The insert in the photo is a heavy wall insert which takes a 9/16-12 tap.  There is even an extra heavy duty one that takes a 5/8-11 tap.

Thank you for the info. I went to the ez-lok web site and it does look a lot stronger.

That is exactly what I have done in the past, with good results even when running spring pressures over 600 pounds open.  I like the EZ-Loks...

Sorry,  for some reason I don't have it set to get an email when a thread update has posted.

But afret and Jay nailed it...basically big inserts for the rocker studs.

Have any of you used 'Keen-Serts'? They're available in regular, heavy duty and extra heavy duty. The little lock-spikes work very well to keep them from coming out.
