There is a beautiful '66 Comet in the April 2014 issue of Car Craft, and the owner (Shawn Carlson) did it right with a strong FE. According to the magazine article the car runs high nines at 135, and uses a 4.375" bore Shelby block, 4.25" stroker crank, Edelbrock heads ported by Kunz, a Victor and a Dominator, and a big roller cam. Also uses a Performance Automatics C-4 and 4.56 gears. The combination is very similar to the 511" engine I went to Drag Week with in 2005, but with deeper gears and probably a bigger cam.
Anybody know the car/owner, or is he by chance a member here? I'd love to see some more pictures of that car, and get details on the engine...

Is it kind of a copper/rust-brown color?
-
Nope, bright red. Also has a Cyclone hood on it.
-
You sure? I thought it was Emberglow...going to the "reading room" now brb
ON EDIT - It is, under body it says it in the write up. I do agree though, most of the colors look red in the pics.
-
So, I guess I assumed that Emberglow was a red color, from the pics in the magazine. Is it more like a copper color in reality?
-
Is this it or is it definitely a different car?

Yes, and really strange in pictures. Sometimes it looks like a bronze, other times a reddish bronze.
-
That's it all right. Do you know anything about the motor, Thor?
-
I think I supplied pistons and a crank to him several years ago...
-
By the picture the color is likely Emberglo, which is a reddish bronze metallic. www.mercurystuff.com.
Gorgeous and fast!

Sweet car!
It probably looks more red because most people are looking at the taillights ;D

That picture Thor posted of the Comet was taken at my home track, Mission Raceway in BC Canada.I have not met the owner, but I have looked at the car, and it is absolutely beautiful. It is more of a copper color, I believe Emberglow is a bit more red, but who knows. I believe it is from Washington state, I first saw it when we were racing at an oldies race at Pacific Raceway, a little south of Seattle. I have no idea who built the engine, but it runs pretty good! It still has the stock column shifter, and a full mint stock interior. Hopefully I will get to talk to the owner at a race sometime this year.

A great shot of what has to be a great car and love those Hookers, gives it a set of fangs. I must also admit to getting hung up in "This Guy's Garage" for a bit too though. I believe the Fairlane in the "unknown" color needs a cammer.......

Emberglow and Indian Fire are essentially the same color, my first car was a 69 Mustang GT that was Indian Fire. Sometimes it looked like a rust, sometimes a red with a fine gold metallic

I saw that car and talked to the owner several years ago. At the time I think he had a tunnel port motor in the car. Nice guy and awesome car.

I was at the race that Rory was talking about, a Nostalgia race near Seattle last July and Shawn was there. I never got a chance to talk with him at all, and don't know anything about the car or engine (I did see it in the staging lanes). You told me more about it than what was known by any of us there, Jay. He should have been racing with us, several 60's Fords including FE cars, along with some Mopar's and Chevies, but apparently he wasn't interested in running the Nostalgia class (his car was perfect for it and was invited).
A buddy sent me that picture, apparently Shawn was talking trash about his (my buddies) car, and challenged him to a match race out of the blue, for some "easy cash". Very strange if you ask me... certainly not your typical "FE guy".
I have heard some other rumors, but will refrain from posting on an open forum. Like I said, I have never met the guy myself. I knew his name was Shawn, and it was a real nice (and quick) 66 Comet with an all aluminum FE, so was just guessing it could be the same guy and car.

I've seen the car as well but never met the owner. It's a beautiful piece with what appears to be a no money spared big inch FE. Certainly odd that he would expect a guy with a home built 390 to want to race for cash. I believe that offer was declined and several counter offers went unanswered. Perhaps the owner went for ice cream or something.
