Title: Twin Novi Supercharged FE
Post by: blueoval67 on October 27, 2013, 08:48:37 PM
Here's some pictures of a project that I'm working on. Its a 69 Mustang Fastback Restomod that will be powered by twin Novi superchargers, alum Pond block, Edelbrock heads, X-66 intake. Exact cubes have yet to be determined but it will probably be in the 480 range and expected horsepower over 1000. The owner picked the engine builder so its in his hands. The blower fab work is being handled by Precision Chassis in Pottstown Pa. Their work is top notch so I feel very comfortable handing this part of the job off to them. These are early fab work photos and I'll have some more to come once the car gets back to my shop.

Awesome project.  Looks kind of like Jack Millers twin Paxton Mustang.  How much boost?

I like it!!  I like it!!  Cool looking build, hope to see more on it as it developes.  I only chose to use one, a ProCharger F2 but two supercharges sure do look cool packed in the engine bay.

I'm not 100% where the boost levels are going to end up. A lot depends upon how well the current pulley set up works. The goal is 1000 hp which I think is attainable with boost in the 15 lbs range per blower but if these pulleys can deliver that I really don't know.

I used to chassis tune an old Pro 5.0 Mustang that had a 331 with a single 94MM turbo which we spun up to just shy of 30 lbs of boost and that thing made well over 1500 HP. That was almost 15 years ago...boy does time fly!!

I'm assuming that even though each blower will be in the 12 to 15 lbs of boost range that won't combine to make 30 lbs but rather just raise the boost to the 20 to 25 lb range or am I wrong?

What are your thoughts Jay?

You'd have to look at the supercharger maps to really know how they are going to respond.  The boost between the two blowers probably won't be exactly additive.  Do you have maps for the blowers?

On the pulley setup, it looks like a 10 rib belt.  Over about 10 psi I had problems with those; they would slip so badly that the blowers just couldn't deliver any more boost.  I tightened the heck out of them but 10-11 psi was the most I could get.  I ended up going with a toothed belt drive on my supercharger setup to get to 17 psi.  However, since you have two blowers, if each is putting out 10 psi and together going into the same engine you end up with 15 pounds of boost, that may be all you need to get to 1000 HP.  Each blower will take a significant amount of horsepower to turn, though.  See the link below for my blower power experiment:

I don't have any maps for the blowers but they are box stock Paxton Novi's. Kind figured that the boost wouldn't be additive. I had a big concern about the slippage of the 10 rib and suggested a cog drive but it was determined that even with slip, enough boost could be made to get to the 1000 hp mark. I'm still skeptical that it will work but we'll see.

Thanks for the input on this Jay and I'll keep throwing in some updates as the engine progresses.

Did one several years ago with a Novi and a ten rib.  If memory is correct it only went to about 9-10 pounds and you could see the boost trace on the dyno printout wiggling - obvious slippage.  Customer was OK with "only" 657 horsepower so we ended the day...

If the 10 rib belt slips, try sand blasting the driven pulleys.  My 8 rib belt (that is 10 years old) started slipping, did the sand blasting and it peaked right at 15psi again.

The pulley set up is finished. The engine will have a remote mount electric water pump due to the belt arrangement but there really wasn't much of an option...

Looks great, Dave.  A very nice, clean installation.
