I'm piecing together a new(ish) chunk for my Mustang using a Daytona Bearing retainer. Does anybody have the dimensions for modifying a standard yoke for Daytona bearing use?
For some reason it must be the biggest secrete on the web because Google is no help.

You're talking about just the large bearing pinion support, right? Or is the retainer a different piece?
I put in a Daytona pinion support but never modified my yoke. I didn't notice any problem with that when I built the unit and it seems fine so far after a few thousand street miles. Are you sure your yoke won't be fine as is?

the yoke itself is too long from bearing race surface to where the nut seats. I've heard conflicting ideas on machining the yoke. Take matieral from the bearing end,from the nut seat area,and from both.
The nut ends up with no threads showing and the yoke is moved forward.
Im needing about 1/4" but I'm not sure where to cut it from.

If you have room to cut it all from the tube end of the yoke and not drive the rest of the yoke into the seal when you tighten the nut, I'd cut it from that end. There's no reason that wouldn't work.

OK did some measurements, I stacked the non Daytona bearings/races in the support and measured 2.2". I did the same with the Daytona bearing support/bearings and have 2.535". So I end up with .335" delta. The splines on the pinion and yoke do not clash and the thread end of the pinion does not protrude past the yoke nut seat area so I think I got my number.
OK after a clay check for seal / slinger clearance I'm going .300".

I have bought several modified for Daytona pinion support yokes from an e-bay vendor IIRC. They had all the material removed from the nut mating surface. Running one now, works fine. Bill

I hadn't noticed it, and it probably would never have become a problem, but yes indeed my pinion nut was way out there flush with the end of the threads on the pinion gear. So I cut the nut face of the yoke back .27" to get a few threads sticking out of the nut. I could have gone a bit further but didn't want to remove more material than I had to, possibly weakening the yoke. It's in a happy place now.
