Shopping Mufflers, I’m wondering if anyone has experience with the Borla XR1? Also what is everyone running on their FE street ride, that they’re pleased with. Thanks everyone!

I have no experience with Borla. I have been happy with the Jones Exhaust mufflers I purchased a few years back. They look like a standard muffler but are basically a glass pack and the cost is easy on the wallet. The pipe that runs through the housing uses the same style Thrush does with holes instead of fins so exhaust flow is as good as it can get.

I have been running a set of Borla 40659 on a 63 Galaxie since 2019 with no issues. The body is 14” long with 2.5” inlet and outlet. They aren’t real quiet but do not have any aggravating drone or real objectionable noise levels at highway speeds. They’re mounted in front of the axle with full length tail pipes on a mild 428 stroker with a TKO 600. Less than $200 back in 2019 but closer to $300 now, they are probably some of the less expensive mufflers from Borla. In 7 years I don’t think the noise level has increased or any noticeable deterioration so I have no real complaints.

I run Borla ProXS on the Mustang 3 inch in and out, and like them. So much better than the 3 inch Flowmaster Deltaflows for power and lack of resonance.
The truck I run 3 inch in/out Jones Full Boar, very similar to the Borla/Magnaflow and quiet enough, really a nice muffler

I run the Borla ProXS mufflers also, and I really like them. If you want to be able to listen to music or the radio while driving, there would be better choices, but that doesn't concern me.
A short clip of idle sound with a healthy cam.

Edit to say that I used the Flowmaster 40's when the car was first done, and I hated them. The sound was decent, not really what I liked though, but the drone was terrible at speed. You could not even have a conversation inside the car.

Has anyone tried the bbk variflow muffler yet? I’m not sure if they would be better or worse than the rest. I kinda think they would drone like a flow master if they aren’t cranked all the way shut, then I think the flow wouldn’t be any good. Looks to be restricting when ran shut.

I’ve been happy with Hooker Aerochambers. They do well in some old muffler dyno tests, not obnoxiously loud but sound good at idle and WOT, and they’re relatively cheap

Agreed I have hooker aerochambers very happy with them

Thanks for all the input. I have a couple things to tidy up before I order them.

Just watched a bunch of videos on mufflers. Jones max flows,,magnaflows,,flowmasters 40s,,Borla pro XP’s and the cheap Jones mufflers make the most horsepower. The borlas which look the best and if you are gonna make a nice stainless exhaust on our nice cars you would probably like to look and the borla or magnaflows but they are down 10 horsepower from the Jones mufflers. But the Jones look like crap. So I am about to make an exhaust and I’m not sure I could look at the Jones mufflers.

I'm a Dynomax man.
-
I'm a 3" straight-thru perforated core, 6" round can 18" long truck resonators man- does wonders for an FE with a lotta squeeze and a lotta stick- trust me. Not too popular with the gendarmes, and not for the faint of heart- but dayum 8) Real deep boom-boom at low speeds, and just howls when it comes on the cam
-
My Comet has 30" long 3" Cherry Bomb glasspacks. There's no sneaking home with those bad boys on.
I really like the Hooker Maxflo's. Similar to other straight through mufflers, some complain they're too quiet. I had them on my blown 454FE. Hard to make a roots blown anything quiet.
I have Magnaflow Super Turbo's on my 1975 F250. Not too loud but still a nice rumble.

I keep coming back to Dynomax super turbos. They’re noticeable, but quietish at idle, smooth at light throttle and cruise speed with no drone, but bark when you’re all in. I’ve tried others, but have always replaced them with the super turbos. They always place near the top of the pack in the comparison dyno testing too.
