Title: 406 Heads more info
Post by: 390thunderbirdspecial on July 09, 2026, 06:40:17 PM
I found the date code 2j14 stamped on both of my 406 heads, to go along with the c2se 6090c code. I believe that to mean they were cast or manufactured 10/14/1962. Also, on the top face of the head, on the left side of each head is the number 63. Does anyone know the significance of that number please ?

Thanks

Just so we’re all on the same page, I assume you mean the date code is CAST in, and not stamped, I just wanted to be sure since old engine parts often have machine shop stamped codes on them, which could mean anything.

The casting date of “2J14” is actually 1962 September 14th.

I’m guessing the “63”, if it’s what I’m thinking you’re describing, is probably a random mold pattern number, you’ll find them on many sides of a Ford FE cast part.

Is the “63” on your head, like the number I have circled here, on this internet picture?

I have read where the 63 denotes combustion chamber size in centimeters. Not sure tho

That doesn't mean anything and sure not combustion chamber size.

The letter I is omitted in the letter to month sequence because it could be confused as a 1. That throws the sequence off by 1 month after that letter.
