So, sonic checking the cylinder walls is just a start - so much more machining to do - big job just to get the mains straight - then decked - no wonder intake fitment on an FE can be way off!

Damn if I didn’t fall into a rabbit hole about piston knurling, after that video.

No "rabbit hole" on piston (or guide) knurling.
Simple.
Don't do it.
It reduces the surface of a load bearing area.
Unit pressure will go up and wear rate will be accelerated.

Oh, I’ve no interest in doing it. Apparently Powell has found himself in a YouTube debate with uncle Tony, about the subject. I unfortunately was clickbaited.

Piston knurling is an old-school tactic for restoring function (temporarily) by taking up the clearance. Works kinda OK for low-rpm tractors n such. I have some old Caterpillar shop magazines from WWII with tips for getting a little more service from worn out engines, when all the new parts were going into wartime production and repair. Heavy ridge reaming, knurling, shimming bearings etc., anything to keep them running reasonably well. High oil consumption was to be expected lol. The old CAT Master Mechanic who gave them to me started out on destroyers in the Pacific in WWII

Agree completely...and I'd expect on a relatively plastic piston it is even worse than a low RPM cast.

Damn the torpedos!   Knurl everything, check cranks with Plastigauge and set timing by ear!
