Title: Hood scoop for 71 Maverick
Post by: 57yblock on September 03, 2013, 10:06:15 PM
I just picked up a 71 Maverick that has an old snorkel style hood scoop. I am not to fond of that style hood scoop so need some ideas on a replacement style. And pictures would help too. This car should be ready to run in a week or so.  :)

Do you need a big scoop on the car?  If not, I always kind of liked the factory Mercury Comet scoops from that era; they are twin scoops kind of molded into the hood contours.

Hi Jay I need a bigger one as this is a quite fast car.

My vote would be the  Ford style "Boss 429" style scoop ,used to have a 71Comet(Mercs verson of Maveric) with a smaller verson of that scoop.
Speedway has a 5" tall verson I like but it's a bond on!

If you want to go for the Dyno Don look I have a couple of these.

I will say, even Dyno modified it as time went on, filling in the bottom of the opening. I'll agree, the snorkle looks, well, kind of "seventies", but they work. My Torino turned it's best et when I had one I borrowed from JC. And I agree with BobFord, I like the tall Boss 429 style. If you want function look to what the Pro Stock guys use. It can be tough to see the Christmas Tree though over a tall scoop.

Come on Phil,  Pictures,  details,  When will you bring it out to play. Put the 460 in the Mav and build a cammer for your Fairlane..

Hi Royce it is powered by a 366 cid pump gas sbf for now. I have a couple of things to do to it and then will take it out racing and see if I like that. At least for this year I plan on leaving the sbf in it. I have never had a light weight car to play with so this might be interesting. I do have a 466 if I decide to put that in it for next year. How did you do at Expo?

I've always been sort of partial to the more sculpted hood bulges, like the one that used to be called the 'Tunnel Ram I' model. They were in the JCWhitney catalog forever, and Speedway used to sell one too, but now it looks like they are out of stock. I have a picture of an early pro-stock Maverick I pirated off the web somewhere, might be Dyno Don's car?

Like Jay suggested, the Maverick grabber scoops look pretty bitchin too. If you need more room, maybe it could be cut and raised to be more like a cowl induction setup?  Found a couple of example pictures on the web.

Whatever you do, it will likely be a vast improvement over that mail slot snorkle on there now!

Personally I absolutely HATE a Chevy style cowl induction hood on any Ford. I actually like the old style snorkle scoop on the Maverick, it looks like an old B/Super Modified racer, like the Boss 302 powered Maverick  Mike Edwards won the last NHRA Modigied Production . Of course I may be a bit biased, since my Fairmont also has a 5" snorkle scoop, just like the Gapp & Roush A/SM  Fairmont that Don Bowles was kicking ass with in 1979 and 80. Pro Stockers were also using snorkle scoops pm the late 70`s.

Snorkle-type scoops actually have a degree of science behind them. It was discovered that the airflow separates over the hood and an intake point right at the surface of the hood misses a lot of air. Since the snorkle both raises the opening by several inches, effectiveness increases. And, I suppose, both from an aesthetic viewpoint and the knowledge that further forward is good too, the snorkle was born!

How about a standard Boss 429 scoop?  It's like a Grabber scoop on steroids and looks good on Mavericks.

Like it! It's also tough to drive a street car with a big, tall scoop....it's even outright dangerous at intersections if it blocks your view of cross traffic.
