Title: 428 cam section
Post by: Pj Uptmor on August 17, 2025, 05:07:01 AM
I would like to start gathering parts to up grade my 428 engine in a cobra replica. Little about the engine  is bored 30 and running 10.5 compression. Cam spec HYD  310 cam lift 542 valve lift  270 Dur .221 050 Dur  lobe center is 108.Heads are Survial FElony head matched port to a Edelbrock rpm manifold with a 750 Holley for carb. Stock adjustable rocker arms with new shaft and end stands. The bottom end is stock except the arp rod bolts was installed. Transmission is TKX and 3:31 rear gears. Dyno 473 horsepower and 501 toque.

My question if I up grade the rocker arms and cam  would I gain  more than 50 or more horsepower gain with these changes.

Depends on what your idea of upgrade is.  Could I get you 50 more horsepower from a cam and rocker change?  Sure.  But the result wouldn't be anywhere near what you would need for your application.

I could probably swing you 10-15 hp and keep the same level of streetability, but not 50.

i have a .245 at .050 hyd cam in my 428 with a 4 speed on the street,it has good manners except when idling along in first,it can start loping and you have to push in the clutch, rev it up a little and take off again,if thats similar to what brent is explaining.

After a day of research i come a conclusion that I need to improve the air flow and efficiency of the engine. Some port work and new rocker arms.
First I need to get the bottom end to handle the extra horsepower than work on the flow of the air.

Brent I would like to talk to you about of a plan of attack. To get me where I want to be with this engine.

Why not add a stroker crank assembly to the block you have...like 445. Power and torque where you can use on the street in a light Cobra....scary FUN !
