Title: Dog Clutch Top Loader
Post by: frnkeore on August 12, 2025, 05:56:10 PM
Does anyone remember a dog clutch conversion for top loaders, back in the late '70's and early '80's?

I'm going to go pick up one on Sat, about 100 mi's from me. It's in pieces but, it's suppose to be complete, with a broken input. It also has a short tail shaft, and main shaft, that will work out for my AH.

Any info, would be appreciated.

Liberty Gears did at one time.

Liberty still does them.  They will take a set of standard gears and convert them over.

A decade or so ago, I used to build Toploaders with a synchronized 1-2 and face-plated 3-4.

Doug Nash used to also do the "crash box" conversions. That said, if it is the older "pro shift" style, like the old Doug Nash 5 speeds, that use modified sliders with larger "windows" and pointed lugs on the gears, those are not anywhere as good as a face plated "dog ring", similar to a Jerico or G Force. The Pro Shift lugs and sliders require periodic freshening, with the burred up lugs and sliders being dressed up with a die grinder. Good thing is the face plate conversion can be done by Liberty, and possibly others.

Thank you, Rory.

When I get it, on Sat, I'll know more about what I have.

Great news today!

I called Liberty and talked to them (Paul) about this trans. I can get a new 26 spline input for about $460 and reheat treat and cryo the main shaft for about $120.

I much prefer the 1-1/8x26 inputs over the others.

Up date:

I got my baby home and it's a Face Plate and not a Pro Shift. It's in the parts cleaner, right now.

It's a CR with 2nd, 3rd and 4th face plated. The dogs have a little wear but, are very serviceable.

The case is a RUG C 2. So, it's a 67 - 69 Fairlane case.

The top cover has a big, aluminum breather on it but, one of the things I like most about it, is that it has a aluminum tail shaft housing, that is only a little over 4" long with a main shaft to match.

Here is what the main shaft gears look like and the aluminum short tail shaft housing. They're in excellent shape, other than the broken input but, the gear and face plate are great on it.

I also got this 3-4 slider with a much smaller dog ring. Anyone know what it might be for?
