Title: RADIATOR HOSE FOR FE EDELBROCK WATER PUMP
Post by: Dubs1 on March 17, 2025, 06:48:08 PM
Hi guys

JAY. CAPT COBRA JET. QUESTION FOR YOU OR ANY OTHER BRAIN TRUST IN THAT AFTER INSTALLING THE EDELBROCK WATER PUMP ON MY 427, I AM STRUGGLEING TO FIND A LOWER RADIATOR HOSE  TO CONNECT THE PUMP TO THE RADIATOR.  A FRIEND HAD HIS INSTALLED 12 YEARS AGO AND HAD A GATES PART NUMBER 206 WHICH FIT FINE. NAPA AND OREILLY SAY ITS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. OD ON THE PUMP IS 2.25 AND OD ON THE RADIATOR IS 2.0.
IF YOU KNOW OF A HOSE AVAILABLE PLS PASS ON THE MAKE  AND PART NUMBER.
I SUPPOSE CHANGING THE RADIATOR OUTLET IS POSSIBLE BUT KINDA EXPENSIVE

THE MUSTAMG IN QUESTION IS AN S CODE 1969 FASTBACK.

MANY THANKS

You’re probably going to want to let us know what vehicle you are working on, since that matters.

If we are speaking about the lower hose, I had a similar situation with an aluminum pump. I found that a coat of silicone grease inside the hose will allow it to slip over the larger dia. pump.

I think you're on the right track with gates 206, but that isn't the complete part number. According to the  1911-1980 Gates catalog, the number should be 20615 for a Fairlane or Mustang. The number for a full-size car should be 20546.  Dale

I have no idea why Edelbrock chose to make the radiator hose outlet so large, I have never had a FE that used that large of a hose. I have had 2 Edelbrock FE water pumps, one for my Fairmont drag car, the other is on the 428 in my 59. I could never find a molded hose that would work, so I ended up having to stretch a normal sized hose enough to be able to (barely) force it over the Edelbrock water pump. I put the end of the hose in a pot of boiling water, to make it more pliable, and after about 20 minutes, and with a healthy application of silicone spray inside the hose, I forced a tapered glass soda bottle into the hose, as far as it would go. I then let it set overnight, and repeated the procedure again the next day, this time the bottle went in a bit further, and let it set overnight again. afterwards I was able to soak the hose with more silicone spray, and finally be able to force the hose onto the pump, while twisting it into position. It fit so tightly, that when I pulled the engine out of the car a couple of years later, I left the hose on the water pump, and removed it from the radiator. It has been in place for 5 years now, and has had no issues with the hose. It would be nice if Edelbrock made the pump end smaller , so a regular hose would fit normally, or if there was a way to reduce the diameter of it, but not aware of a way to do that.

THANK YOU EVERYONE   WHO RESPONDED.

THE GATES 206 IS ON A FFIENDS S CODE 390  THAT HE INSTALLED ABOUT 12 YEAERS AGO.  AND THE LETTERS /NUMBERS ON THE HOSE READ 206.

I WILL WORK THE HEATING AND SILIICONE IDEAS.

Yeah I grinded down that big rim at the end and the hose still was hard going on. I have a crossflow so I have two hoses together and I lost the paper with the two part numbers on it but that hose is now permenantlybon that pump. I don’t even think I need a clamp. Ha Ha.

Gates 20615.  The one I had fit the Edelbrock pump just fine, but it could be because it was on the old iron pump for quite a while……even when I replaced it with one of the factory stamped versions the Mustang places sell it still fit without a lot of fuss….(69 CJ Mustang stock radiator)

If you can't find a molded hose you can build a hose system.

One short, straight, section of rubber hose to go on the water pump.
One short, straight, section of rubber hose to go on the radiator.
Fabricate the bent middle section from stainless steel tube and swage the end bulges into it to help hold the hose sections.

Piece the whole thing together and you have a lower hose/pipe that will last a long time.

Yes, this is a screw around, but it works.
