Post by: Pj Uptmor on December 02, 2023, 12:43:15 PM
I would to port my aluminum head and manifold to get a few more horsepower.

Who is stopping you?

Grinding on heads or intake without knowing exactly what you are doing can make less horsepower - sometimes much less.

I am sorry.
Who does the best job on porting on heads and manifold?

Tell us about the engine you are building.
What heads and intake do you have new?
What engine size displacement? 390? 428? Stroker?
Do you have a horsepower goal?

Hard to make suggestions without knowing what you have or what you want.

Cheers

why not talk to barry about your ideas?or brent lykins he is on here as well.
how much hp does your engine make?and how much more do you want?and where are you located?
those heads flow pretty good out of the box,so maybe more cam duration? what cam is it, i ran a 428 with hydrauic roller with 232 @ .050 and loved it.tire smoker for sure and that was withe 428 cj heads and mild porting.

Thank you for the information.
With a 428, relatively low rpm camshaft timing - I would not waste $0.01 porting the heads and intake manifold.
You will have a very street friendly build - likely +450 HP.
Put it together and enjoy!

What cam would you recommend for a middle range rpm? This motor is in a cobra. Would like to increase torque . This what I am trying to achieve with this engine.

The cam you listed will provide huge torque. In a light cobra, this will be fantastic.
For the heads, just make sure that they have a good valve job - 4 angle, and a back cut intake. Perhaps barry has already done this to these heads.

Thanks for the advice

Those heads - as delivered - can support over 600 HP.  The cam you have was selected for high torque/modest higher power/RPM use.  While you can always port the heads for more power in a race or semi-race application, that small of a cam will always be more of a limit than anything else.  Want more power - go with a larger cam - move the effective RPM band up.

In all honesty, low end torque is rarely a concern in a car as light as a Cobra.  With most cam/intake combinations those heads are going to get you between 1.2 and1.3 lbs of torque per cubic inch.  The cam and intake selection will determine where in the RPM range that torque peak comes.

A cam in the 230ish+@50 range or even 240ish if you really want some mid range bark.
You may be out cammed by small block cobra's if you use the 270.

I dont think you need more torque than you already got with that combination in a cobra
not with a manual trans anyway ??? will be a bit jumpy traction problem too
