Title: Coolant recovery
Post by: allrightmike on June 02, 2023, 08:18:09 AM
Does anyone out there know of a coolant recovery cap to fit a '60-'64 FE surge tank? A P/N or application.

Any of them will work.  You just replace the radiator cap and puke hose with a radiator cap made for a recovery system and a hose to run to a recovery tank.

Do you need a recovery tank when using the surge tank?

You don`t NEED a coolant recovery tank, the factory never used them back then, but if the coolant level is too high, or the engine overheats, it will puke onto the ground, and anything between the overflow tube and the ground. Any dragstrip will require at least some type of catch can, in case that was to happen.

Got it.  I was curious because the big trucks at work typically run surge tanks with a hose to the ground and they work out OK as long as they aren't over filled.  It's without a doubt more friendly for the environment to catch what pukes out.
