Title: 9 Inch Question
Post by: Diogenes on May 19, 2023, 10:17:36 AM
Besides being over-filled, what could cause the diff to leak out the vent hose?

It is located and routed properly, but sometimes when I run it at higher speeds, it will leak a bit in the driveway before pulling it in the garage. It is a Traction Lock purchased new from Jegs, 3.89 gear. It was installed high up on jack stands, so it was probably somewhat over-filled, but that was probably 2 years ago. I need to check fluid levels on a drive on lift, but that has yet to happen.

Thoughts??

Jack it up, pull the fill plug after placing a pan underneath. Drop it to be sure the car is level.  See how much gear oil comes out.

Makes sense. I guess I've been over-thinking the problem--not the first time.... :)

Thanks.

The high speed is the key here.
The vent may need to be lengthened more than stock.
Stock is fine for stock and car shows.
Actually driving fast will make the oil foam up quite a bit.
It also runs pretty hot. Which is normal.
Maybe just a longer tube will solve the problem.
You can not have too much gear oil in the axle.
It won't let you.

Yes, if no or little oil comes out, a longer tube section as noted may solve it. But, be sure the current line (take it out, clear it) is not blocked.
