Title: Coolant Leaking from Thermostat area
Post by: Robin Hood on March 10, 2023, 11:48:34 AM
I have this problem with getting a good seal between my surge tank and the intake manifold. Seams like maybe the bottom edge of the manifold is pitted heavily and maybe eroded from leaking over the years.
I am thinking of pulling the manifold and lightly fly cut the surface to get it flat and no pitting.

Has anyone else had this issue?
Any help would be appreciated

what kind of intake? I have a 3x2 intake that is very thin behind where the therostat goes, check to see if the intake inself is leaking and not the gasket surface.

It is a High Riser on my Thunderbolt. I checked it with crack check and it was OK.

I had a leak down in that area. In the end the leak was between the tube and the flange

Thanks I’ll check it

The cast flange that forms the connection between the tank and the manifold has a very narrow surface to seal with. Pitting is very common, it might be a "pinch point" in the corrosion process that goes on in the engines.

Flattening that surface to get more/better sealing is a definite step in the right direction. Gasketing and appropriate sealers are also recommended.
