While looking for a rear end for my 63 housing a buddy of mine had one he said came out of a 70's F 100 so since it was the right distance from flange to flange for a 63 I gave his $125.00 for it.
He asked me if I wanted the carrier for it as he didn't want it because it was a open rear.
I picked it up a couple of hours ago and it is a C4AW 4023A.
Last thing I expected.
Looking at it there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it. I will check the backlash tomorrow when I get some time.
The ring and pinion look all most new with no unusual wear anywhere that I can find and the unit rotate's real nice with no jerks or rough spots.
I guess I will go ahead and order a Powertrax unit for it and have a cheap locker.
By the way when I checked it out as near as I can tell it is a 3.70 ratio but won't be able to tell when I can take a pinion count.

Just a note:
The Powertax and other units like it that are located by the cross-pin are a very poor choice if one is going to apply any substantial load to the drive train. ;)

Thanks Scott
I have never used one of these and they advertise them as being able to hold a good launch. I went to there website and could find nothing about how much power they could hold.
i would guess that I will have about 350 to 375 rear wheel horsepower when I get the engine together.
Guess it is back to plan A and a little more expense.

Detroit TruTrac FTW.

Plan A was a full Detriot locker from sirp.
This is what I have used in the past on 90% of my builds and I have never broke one, but being a miser I was looking at a cheaper option.
