From bn69stang, sent to me as a PM by mistake:
Hello ford fans , im a newbie and have cam question . I have a 69 mach 1 with 428 that is 40 over , 10.75 to 1 comp , biue thunder dual plane intake , holley 750 hp double pumper , fpa header s , msd ignition , tremec 5 speed , 3.70 s with a locker . this is a street car mostly , heads are stock can i make 500 hp range with the comp 282 s solid , want rpm range about 2200-6200 ? . Do i need to do bigger valves and bowl work to get there ?
-
I`m going to say 425ish with a wheelbarrel full of torque.
If the heads are stock to the car you may want to reconsider rubbing them.
For some reason the guys with money always want stock. lol

Buy Jay's book!

well thanks guys , and i forgot to add they were edelbrock my bad . will bigger valves , bowl clean up add 35-40 hp like Barry s mentions ? thanks..

I think you're still lacking the cubes and/or cam to approach 500HP even with the edelbrocks. Others can probably get a more precise estimate, but I'd say around 450HP is where you're at now.
Why the 500HP target on a street car? What you have now will be quite decent pushing that mustang around.

yeah i guess cubic inchs , i have another 428 block so maybe a 462 ish inch stroker or just tell my wife i want a genesis 427 block for x mas .. thanks

The smallish cam will hold you back.
Bigger roller and work on the heads. You can get a 2.10 valve in there.
Stock Ed's are not even close to max flow. A good home port job will see pretty good gains.
A really nice valve seat will see 10 + gain over stock Eds.
Bigger headers will net you a few.
Reworking the cooling system will net you 20 +-.
All the little things will add up.
If you really need a boost a small shot won't hurt.
You can get there, but work, time and money... :P
Santa will not be bringing you a Genesis. They have been out of production for a while now.
There are other options though. Pond and Shelby.

Thanks for the input , would love a Shelby block and a 4.375 crank and a few other parts ..

As others have said, the main things you'll need are more cam and a good port job on the Edelbrock heads.
Here's a combo I ran many years ago that is somewhat similar to what you're talking about. The cam is only a few degrees larger than the 282S you mentioned, but it has considerably more aggressive lobes, for more area under the lift curve.
It was dynoed on a DTS engine dyno with open headers.
-428 "C" block bored 0.025" over for a 4.155" bore. 432 cubic inches.
-Factory cast 428 crank
-Factory CJ rods with ARP bolts
-Holley 850 double pumper with choke horn milled off. 76 jets all around.
-Blue Thunder dual plane intake port matched to heads. 1" four hole spacer.
-Edelbrock #6005 heads with Ferrea 2.09/1.65" valves, 45 degree seat intake and exhaust. Intake ported pretty extensively. Exhaust just cleaned up. Flow @ 0.600" 293/206 cfm.
-Harland Sharp roller rockers
-JE forged pistons. 10.5:1 static compression
-Solid flat tappet cam. 270/276 degrees @ 0.020". 240/246 degrees @ 0.050". 0.598"/0.608" gross lift. 108 degree lobe separation. 107 degree intake centerline. This is a Compcams custom grind. Intake lobe is a 270XTQ and the exhaust is a 276TL. Lifters are Crower dumbbells with the "cool face" EDM oiling hole.
-Milodon deep sump oil pan. Melling HV oil pump. oil passages opened up at oil pump mount. 0.090" restrictors to rockers. windage tray.
-Crites headers. 2" primary tubes. 3.5" collectors.
-MSD Pro Billet distributor. MSD 6AL box. MSD Blaster coil. 16 degrees initial timing. 37 degrees total.

Keep your parts. go with a 294s comp cam (one up from the 282). flat tappet solid. keep your heads w/ the valves. bowl cleanup wouldn't hurt. this will yield you 500 horsepower. all day. tad more compression wouldn't hurt either. don't waste money on a complete shortblock. keep it all, spend $ in the valvetrain

nice thanks Paulie , thats a healthy f e .. looks like some head work and a cam change for my 428 . thanks ror all you guys input .
