Title: Question for auto a/c guys
Post by: AlanCasida on January 21, 2022, 04:35:35 PM
I am in the process of putting the a/c back in my 66 Galaxie and I have run into a little snag with the expansion valve. It is still the old flare type fitting unit and the inlet side has an oddball thread size that I can't find a fitting for. I have looked at replacements but the ones I think will fit have a different end on the capillary tube. Mine has a bulb on it and the replacements I am looking at have a coiled tube. My quest is will that make difference? Or are they just made differently now. I have included a picture of what I have and an ad for what I want to get. Thanks!

Haven’t ever seen a expansion valve with the coiling of the cap tube at the end so that may be something new. It would seem that the installation would probably be the same, clamped to the suction line, probably lightly as to not crush it, and wrap with insulation in the “bulb” area.

You might want to try this company, they are based in the Dallas area. I have had some good things come from them on old AC systems.  When I have had questions they were very helpful and knowledgeable.

Thanks. I actually sent them a message this afternoon about one they have on Ebay and they said it would work.

This is where you want to go with OE AC systems. They restored the expansion valve for my 67 Shelby. They can also restore or make new lines for just about anything.

Alan, +1 on Classicautoair.com.  IIRC they're based in FL.  I bought the compressor, valves, and fan switch from them for the factory Selectaire in my '63 Galaxie.  Also bought the expansion valve and evaporator for my '66 Fairlane with factory AC.
