Title: 67 Mustang with a 351/408 CJ in it... Cleveland Question

I just picked up a 67 coupe drag car to play with, It currently has a solid rollered 351/408 CJ bottom end in it.  Supposedly a low 10s car as it is.  It has an edelbrock torker 351 single plane intake on it now with a 4150 flange, and adapter and then a Dominator.  It just kinda goes against everything I currently know about engines to leave this setup alone, I cant stand the idea of the adapter setup.  Does anyone have any experience with a setup like this?

That's a horsepower maker.   I set up a lot of my bracket engines like that.

     I realize that there will be a multitude of different experiences as if only the circumstances of any two instances are generally not the same, and particularly with "bracket" motors one isn't always looking for the most H.P. but, .......... We have in several instances tested (dyno & track) an engine with these funnels adapting a Dominator carburetor to a 4150/4160 flanged intake manifold, then reworked the intake thru welding, milling and hand porting, resulting in what one might feel is a proper Dominator application intake, and have always end up with something better in performance.   ;)

     Personally, I think the 'funnel-adapter', well...............it just sucks!   :o

Well, it will mainly depend on the size carburetors, but that's one of the main advantages of using the Dominator adapter, you can run a bigger carb than most of the 4150's that are available. 

The tapered carb spacers like the HVH Super Sucker add a good bit of velocity to the system.  I used one on a 395ci FE with a Performer RPM intake (just being goofy and playing around) and added a few horsepower, but the peak horsepower rpm moved up almost 500 rpm.

In Jay's intake adapter testing, he tested many of the "hot" 351C intakes, such as the Strip Dominator, D1ZX, Torker, Scorpion, etc., and the combos with the 1100 Dominator gained anywhere from 13 to 30 horsepower (with most of them being around 20 hp difference) against a 1000 cfm 4150 carb.

A Dominator on a 4150 intake with HVH Super Sucker will make more torque and horsepower everywhere when jetted properly.  I used a 1250 Dominator on my 375 Y Block in testing(561tq/585hp), and the only thing better was a tunnel ram with Pro Systems 860s(567tq/595hp).  Joe-JDC

Joe, that is interesting, on my 428 in my Fairmont, back when it had an automatic (with a transbrake),  I tried 5 different intake manifolds, and at least 1/2 dozen different carbs, including a 1050 Dominator, with an adapter, and nothing I tried, ran quicker or faster, than a Holley 780 vacuum secondary on a modified Sidewinder. The Dominator was used on a PortOSonic, and ran no faster than the 780 on that same intake. In fact, among the five different intakes, there was less than 1/2 tenth from the best to the worst. Maybe a dyno may read more of a difference, but the 1/4 mile dyno did not. And on my current 347 SBF, it has run identical numbers (10.01ET at 132 MPH), with both the same 780 vacuum, and a 750 DP.

Rory, not to hijack the thread, but when dyno testing my 375 Y for EMC competition, I tried 650 QF, 750QF, 750 Holley, 930 Barry Grant, 2-650 QF on TR, 2-750QF on TR, 2-860 Pro Systems on TR, and 1250 Dominator.   The Barry Grant 930 DP stage 3 was within 1 hp of the Dominator, but the Dominator had better score overall when combining the torque average, horsepower average, and doing the EMC point chase.  The Dominator actually had best torque of all the single 4Vs.  Goes against most folks' theories.  Time to accelerate was a factor when setting the dyno on 300 rpm/sec, for the tests, proving the torque was not a fluke.  Lots of other parameters for EMC testing, that were looked at.  Joe-JDC

Good to note in case my carb guy thinks a dommy would be better for my new 427 clevor race engine.

Also note there is a dearth of 351C intakes that would natively accept a Dominator.  Except that bolt together Speedmaster thing.

That'll work LOL.  Nothing nicer than a C with ram on it.
