So thinking about new exhaust for my car. I have 3 inch flowmasters right now and I have run them at the track and taken them off and they dont really hold the car back much. That being said the drone is just to much. I would rather sacrifice alittle bit and be able to hear myself think. What is everybody running. I really need to hear the different sounds whether they are Borla, Magnaflow or whatever else is out there. I dont want to make up an exhaust and not like the sound.

There is a thread about a dozen back that covers some of what you are asking about.
Pype’s exhaust systems used to have audio of some of their mufflers. I have one of their stainless x pipes with built in legs for cut outs. Also some of their mufflers. It’s a 2.5” system.

Barry R's car is the best sounding FE I ever heard, but I don't recall what he was running. I'm almost sure he's running a full 3" system, but don't recall the mufflers.

I run Magnaflow system with tailpipes 3 inch with an x pipe quite loud and has a different sound but I can live with it. I have some vids on youtube at Beraver. Search hbomb49

Quite some time back I used some Flowtech Afterburners on a mostly full exhaust - turndowns at the rear axle. Had a good sound IMHO. Right now, it's 3" short bullets with turndowns on the end right under the seats, so not the current guy to ask LOL.

I now have 3 inch to a 3 inch X pipe to 3 inch Flowmasters and 2.5 inch tailpipes. I was rushing around at the track and needed to take the exhaust off and cut the tailpipes off so now the exhaust has no tails but has over the hump and pointing down. The 2.5 were a pain in the ass near the rear leaf spring eye in the back. Although I do have old time shackles.

here is my 427 with Pype's 3" X pipe, Flowmaster 40's and 3" to the end. With FPA headers. Somehow I got lucky with no drone sounds.

Thanks Doug it is Doug right. Love the sound of flowmaster. No drone you got lucky, Maybe it’s the shorter system on a mustang?? Well either way she sounds great.

I'am pretty sure i have the same flowmaster's as fairlaniac mine are only on a 2.5" system atm i have an x pipe too sound real close to that note no drone and not bad inside the car.

New exhaust 445 with my red truck is 3 inch with a Y pipe and Jones Full Boar

There are some others, ask if interested. I am NOT a Flowmaster fan, in some of them, my Mustang and the truck has Deltaflow 50s, and it sounded great outside, but rattled my head inside, even under the bed of the truck

Some nice sounding cars in your stable Ross. If the Borlas are quiet inside the vehicle then maybe I will try them. Never heard of Jones mufflers. Doug likes them on his stang also.

Thanks, I love the Borlas, but the core is slightly less than 3 inch, the Magnaflow on my buddies 68.5 are also quiet inside, but are almost consistent 3 inch core. Might be a smidge better deal, but regardless, I think I gained power with the Borla
FYI - Any absorption muffler will get rid of the drone. When Flowmaster advertises sound waves being reflected, energy cannot be destroyed, just changed to a different form (High School science) so the Flowmasters convert some sound energy into heat, and the rest is absorbed into the body as mechanical energy. They have to vibrate, it's the only way to get rid of the energy, when you hit the right combination of load and rpm, you get the resonance.
I still have the brand new 50 series on the shelf, I tried them a few times, always took them off. I want to love them, just can't LOL

I run the 3 inch version of these and absolutely no drone and not as loud as the old Flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers. A totally different sound. See if I can get a video clip of them on my car.

5 yrs ago at Beaver Springs I had the pleasure of running my 56 427 powered F100 down the strip There was a guy recording the parade of cars and trucks going down the strip. He made a video of the procession and actually mentions my name in it. I got the vid and you can hear the sound of my 427 . The exhaust is a hand built SST system pipe mufflers and tail pipes that I built. I don`t know if its posted some place but I got many comments on the sound.

Funny everyones car sounds great. If it wasnt for the drone I would leave my flowmasters. But I do like that the Borla,,and Magnaflow look nice also.

Curious what your timeslips looked like thru the 3" Flowmasters vs open (and where they were opened ie how much pipe was still on there)

Do you know what flowmasters you have on the car? what about adding dynamat or some other sound proofing? i'm running a head shielding like this mine was around 12mm thick https://www.dynamat.com/products/dynaliner/?tab=automotive it worked great keeping heat and sound down.

Not Flowmasters, but just for comparison, on the last day of Drag Week 2017, I took the exhaust and air cleaner off on my last run and gained .5 in ET.
2.5" system, but my guess is the air cleaner had as much to do with the gain as the exhaust.

Werby at the time I was running between 11.11 and 11.20 opened up with drag radials.
The next time I went to the track I ran 11.40 back to back passes with my exhaust on. Now I have hooker super comp with a 3 inch X pipe. After the headers there is about 1.5 ft of pipe then the X pipe then another 1.5 ft of pipe then the 40 series flowmasters then over the hump tailpipes cut off when they straighten out to go to the back.

I do have dyna mat on the front and rear floor going to the back seat. I should have gone th the rear end which would have covered the mufflers. I have the original 40 series mufflers and I love the sound. If and it is an if I put a cage in the car I will finish off the dyna mat to under the rear seats and as far back as I can. It can only help.

im getting ready to get rid of my 3 inch flowmasters,not happy with the sound.i have been using cherrybombs most of the time in the past 40 years on FEs.bar none i think cherrybombs sound better than any other muffler on a fe.always have,they are not too loud crusing,but when you step on it they blast out.they dont sound as good on a chevy or mopar as they do on a fe.not an opinion,just stating a fact.

I was thinking of going 3 or 4 inch oval exhaust for my new system and side pipes out just infont of the back wheels got to see what muffles i can fit with that set up but that may get fitted and run once and taken off.

I recently built a full under car exhaust for a 1967 Shelby Cobra 427 Roadster (street car trim)
2.25" pipes, all mandrel bends, full over axle and out the rear of the car.
The mufflers are SpinTech 6000 series.
The mufflers were custom made (stainless steel) to fit the limited space available, but not a lot different than their "stock" version.
The exhaust is surprisingly quiet while cruising, yet still has a great idle rumble, and barks well when getting on the gas.
Everyone who has heard the new system agrees it sounds very good.
Everyone who rides in the Cobra is astounded how quiet it is in the car when cruising.
The SS SpinTechs were $$$$$, due to being SS and a custom size, but I am sold on the build quality, performance, and sound when using a full exhaust system.

as far a hp goes straight thru designed mufflers will outperform chambered mufflers.i saw a heads up comparison on several name brand mufflers,some of the big names lost a few hp to the straight thru mufflers.not naming any names but they lost power
