Title: AFR sbf heads

Quick question for some of the engine builders.

Generally, on a set of AFR renegade heads, how much material can be taken off the
Deck before you get into the valve seat?

You mean directly down to the seat, or just down far enough that the valve hangs down below the deck surface?

Does AFR recommend  as a max value for cutting the heads?

I know factory heads have the little indicator nub (?) .

I'm assuming that your trying to get as much compression as possible, using FT or dished pistons?

If so, I think a quick call to AFR would get the info you need. I'm sure they have had questions asked similar to yours or what is the minimum CC's  possible, with your type of head.

Joe, I haven't done a set of AFR heads like this, but I've cut some SBF factory heads down to the point where the valve head hung down below the deck surface.  I have notched plates for when I pour chambers for situations like that. 

I see no reason why you can't cut a set of AFR heads down, they will have thicker deck surfaces, but like Frank said, a quick call to AFR would probably get you a precise answer.

thank you, I looked at AFR's web page on their 185 as cast sbf head, and it looks like they recommend a  max cut of .030. That seems reasonable.

My question was not aimed at a particular engine or compression ratio, more just to find out how much material can be taken off a " stock " or "aftermarket stock type" head before you hit the valve seat. Its an odd question on its own,i get that. Brent, on project JJ, i saw a pic that showed you cut the stock heads right down to the valve seat,

so how much did you cut off to get there?
