Title: 445 Main and Rod Torque Specs
Post by: 72ranger on May 16, 2021, 05:28:11 PM
I am in process of building a 445 Stroker. Is there a different torque spec than a 390 for the main and rod caps?

Thanks in advance!

If you’re using stock bolts on the mains I’d say no.  Aftermarket studs are likely different. Rods would be dependent on which rod & bolts you have.

I am using ARP bolts (not studs) on the mains and the rods are scat rods.

ARP main bolts torque at 100.

ARP 8740 rod bolts in Scat rods torque at 65.

ARP 2000 bolts will have different torque spec so check the head of the bolt for identification.

In addition to proper bolt stretch, you also want to be torquing to the values the mains were aligned with, and use the proper lube.

If you are just swapping bolts on the mains, and didn't do an align hone, it likely won't be straight, not necessarily because of the bolts, but because old FEs generally have misaligned/tapered mains LOL

Additionally, I have been leaving the washers off the rear main for a long time, align honing it that way, and torquing to 105 with liberal lube.  It leaves you room for the head of the bolts without cutting another .100 or so away from the cap (although nothing wrong with a clean dress on the cap either)
