FE Technical Forum / Rocker arm alignment
« on: September 21, 2012, 04:15:05 AM »
Just received my T&D rocker arm set from Survival and did a test fit on my Pond MR heads. The rocker set is the street type that is meant to be a bolt on replacement for factory parts.

It all looks good, but I did notice that the side to side alignment of the roller tips to the valve stems is a bit off. I'm sure I can machine the spacers and use shims to get the alignment correct of all the central rocker arms. But on the 2 end arms, they need to be moved outward, and there appears to be not enough distance to move them before they hit the end stands.

Would it be possible to machine the inside face of the end stands to give me a bit more movement of the arm. I don't think it would be much that would need to be removed, maybe 0.060". I don't think it would weaken the end stand much, but wanted to get some opinions from the experts. Has anybody else encountered this problem before?

« on: August 09, 2012, 03:55:03 AM »
For sale is a complete Aviad dry sump system. It is all brand new, I no longer have plans for it. The kit consists of:

1 x 5 stage series 2 pump with regulator
1 x FE pump adapter
1 x Drive sleeve for the crank, sits behind the damper
1 x 20mm drive pulley and belt
1 x FE remote filter adapter
1 x Remote filter mount bracket
1 x 3.0gal oil tank with breather and sight tube assembly
1 x 3 pick up FE dry sump pan with pick ups on RH side.

I can provide pictures of all parts for anyone interested. At current prices new it would cost close to US$3500, I'm asking US$2500.
Now here's the catch - I'm in Australia. I can arrange international shipping at the buyers expense.

If interested, please email me at toddkeen@hotmail.com

I'm searching for an anchor bolt from a 11"x3" front drum brake to suit a Galaxie. This is the big bolt that goes through the spindle and holds the wheel cylinder in place. It is a different part to the bolt used on standard 11"x2.5" drum brakes. If anyone can help me out, please email. toddkeen@hotmail.com Thanks.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Shipper wanted for block and heads
« on: May 28, 2012, 06:02:31 PM »
I'm looking to buy a bare block and pair of heads that are for sale in Mastillion OH. I need to get them shipped to an agent I use in Wilmington CA. Does anyone know of a shipped I can use who will pick up and drop off?

Alternatively, anyone who may be returning to CA after visiting Carlisle and has room to carry a block and heads, I will gladly reimburse you for your help.

FE Technical Forum / Windage tray - Screen vs Louvered
« on: April 30, 2012, 03:47:28 AM »
I'm looking at buying a windage tray for my 496 stroker. I see Canton now make a louvered type tray as well as the mesh screen type. Which is better? And will the louvered type still work with a 4.25" stroke crank?

FE Technical Forum / 63 Galaxie generator wiring
« on: April 18, 2012, 07:41:57 AM »
After doing some work on the 390 in my 63 Galaxie, I have fitted the generator back. But I forgot to mark which wire goes where. I know the big output wire goes to the terminal on the back. But I'm not sure of which wire goes to which of the 2 smaller terminals on top of the generator. One of the wires appears to be black and the other wire is either yellow or white. Can anyone help me out with getting these wires on the correct terminals?

FE Technical Forum / Valve height difference
« on: March 03, 2012, 01:11:28 AM »
I've just had a new set of 2.09" / 1.65" stainless valves installed  in my C1AE-A heads. I checked the valve installed heights and the intakes sit higher than the exhaust valves by 0.040". Is this a problem? I will be using adjustable roller tip rockers and will be buying new pushrods after I measure the required length. Will this be okay? The engine is not too wild, just a mild 390 running a Comp 270S cam.

FE Technical Forum / Genesis block main cross bolts
« on: March 02, 2012, 03:21:23 AM »
I have a used Genesis iron block that was supplied without any crossbolts, and with unknown quality main cap bolts. I plan on using studs on the mains. Will ARP FE main studs work on the Genesis block? It has the newer style large main caps.

Also, what bolts and washers do I need for the crossbolts? Do ARP make these as a kit? I want to get all these bolts before I send the block out for machining.

FE Technical Forum / Simple question
« on: March 01, 2012, 04:55:55 AM »
When looking at the crank or balancer from the front of the engine, what direction does the crank rotate? Clockwise or counter-clockwise? I forgot to check before I pulled the timing cover off to do a cam swap, and now I'm at the stage of dialling in the cam. Thanks.

FE Technical Forum / C3AE-C heads, what can they flow?
« on: January 02, 2012, 10:12:32 PM »
What sort of power are a set of C3AE-C heads capable of? These are the 390 heads, 72cc chambers. I'd look at upgrading the valves to 2.09"/1.65", a good valve job, bowl blend, smooth the valve guide bosses and a general port clean up. Any idea what they should be able to flow?

I'd be looking at running them on a 390, around 10 to 1 comp, solid cam(maybe a Comp 270S or a 282S), tripower intake, long cast headers, 4 speed and 3.5 gears in a Galaxie.

FE Technical Forum / Thoughts on my planned combo
« on: July 22, 2011, 12:44:03 AM »
I'm gathering parts together to build a new engine for my recently acquired 63 Galaxie boxtop. It currently is a Z code 4speed and I would like to build it into a G code clone. The car will be 98% street driven, with a very occasional 1/4 mile run. I want it to look very factory stock externally and under hood, though it won't be a total matching numbers type clone. Here's the engine combo I currently have parts for:

Genesis cast iron block 4.28" bore
Steel 4.25" stroke crank
Diamond flat top pistons - should produce 10.5 to 1 comp
Pond MR heads, stock ports, flowed 305 at 0.600", 315 at 0.700"
Tripower intake system
427 cast exhaust headers
Factory dual point distributor with Duraspark conversion, MSD 6AL.

I plan on using a Hyd roller cam, something around the 245 at 0.050" duration. I think that with this many cubes and only a tripower feeding it, peak hp will be limited to around 5500rpm, so I will cam it accordingly. Plus, I will keep the stock 3.5 diff gears and be looking for big  torque to keep the big car lively on the street. I don't want a wild idle, but something that sounds nice and won't be a pain to cruise with. Any thoughts or suggestions for the cam?

Also, I realise that there is a port mismatch between the Pond MR heads and the tripower intake. I went with the Pond heads because externally they look very similar to factory iron heads and with a coat of black paint they will look the part. Is it worth trying to weld the bottom of the port floor on my tripower intake to build a smoother transition, or at these rpm's and power levels is it not worth the effort? I'm hoping to achieve 500+ hp and 550+ ft.lbs of torque. Is this realistic?

Any thoughts or suggestions on this combo would be appreciated. Thanks.

FE Technical Forum / 63/64 427 exhaust manifolds
« on: July 15, 2011, 12:46:40 AM »
I have just received a set of early long cast 427 exhaust manifolds I bought off ebay. These are the first set I have seen up close in real life. I've noticed that on both manifolds, one of the upper bolt holes is a smaller diameter than the rest. Is this normal, and do I need a special set of bolts to fit these? Thanks.

FE Technical Forum / Intake gasket thickness
« on: June 01, 2011, 10:36:56 PM »
What is the common thickness of intake gaskets?

I'm getting some intake gaskets custom made for my race engine, and am far from having the heads or intake dummied, so I don't know the exact thickness of the gaskets I will require. If I was to get some made in common sizes, what sizes should I go for?

FE Technical Forum / Vacuum pump questions
« on: May 05, 2011, 03:25:56 AM »
Has anybody got experience building an engine designed to be run with a vacuum pump? What special considerations need to be looked at regarding sealing the engine and low tension rings? This will be a wet sump engine.

I've asked the same questions over on Ford FE forum, but thought I'd ask here too, as this seems to be a bit more of a technically inclined forum. Thanks.

FE Technical Forum / Short travel hydraulic roller lifters
« on: April 10, 2011, 03:30:51 AM »
Has anybody had any experience with short travel hydraulic roller lifters in an FE?

I see from the Summit website that Scorpion makes a set for the FE Summit Racing

Not a lot of info from the Scorpion website, although they are made in the USA. Has anybody used them?
