1971 F250 camper special 520CI ProPort monster
« on: August 19, 2016, 08:57:47 AM »
Thought I would start a thread, unfortunately I can't upload photos at this time, looks like the format on my phone isn't right.

I bought the truck about 8 months ago, it's in extremely good shape, very straight, new paint and interior.

The origional, tired, 360 is still lumbering away under the hood. 100% stock in all its 2bbl lazy C6 slush box glory. Not sure what gears are in it, need to crawl under and look, hopefully the tag is still there. Seat of the pants tells me it's probably got 3.73 -4.11 gears. Think those were the common offerings in the camper special.

A rather heavy wooden box arrived at the shop a few weeks ago, inside is a shiny new block from BBM. I haven't had time to do more then pop the top off the box, but I can tell you the underside of the block looks awesome. Beefy as hell with ARP main studs and cross bolts, the screw in frost plugs appear to be stainless steel, and really pop against the gloss black paint.

The plan is to build a big stroker, 520 or maybe a 527 ( 527 has a nicer ring to it... ) depends on how big I can safely go on the bore while leaving enough room for a rebuild down the road if needed.
I've been told 520 (4.35 bore - 4.375 stroke ) is a safe bet.

Going to be giving Blair Patric a call soon about a set of heads. I work out in the feild, where we're at now there is no cell service at all, driving me nuts.

Going to be using one of Jays intake adapters as well.

I'm still waffling a bit on exactly the temperament of the motor. Years of building small block motors for street use has probably jaded me a bit. With small blocks, we always tried to use aftermarket heads when possible, but we usually went with the small port offerings, same with the cams, good aftermarket grinds, but small by most bench racer standards. These motors generally were a blast to drive on the street, well mannered and addictingly fun throttle responce.
That is what I want for this truck, except I also would love to get at least 600hp out of it just for bragging rights. Well, bragging rights and I want to blow the doors off of every dodge cummins I see with the massive "CUMMINS" sticker in the back window and billowing so much black smoke that incoming flights have to be re-routed.

Having only ever built one 500+ cube motor, a stock headed 460 for towing, I'm a bit out of my element with this motor.

My instinct is to put a very mild cam in it and call it good. But I'm thinking that I could easily step it up a notch or two, with so much torque available I figure low end throttle responce is not going to be a problem. Spinning the wheels every time I breath on the throttle might be though.

So I'm wondering how big of a cam ( hydraulic roller of course ) I can put in the motor yet maintain good idle quality. Idle doesn't need to be rock solid at 600rpm, but I don't want a choppy, surgy 900 rpm idle either.
My thinking is that it might actually be easier to drive if I move the torque curve up a little.
Lots of time to sort that out though.

I'm also planning on putting sequential port fuel injection on it, that should also help the idle out, but to what extent I'm not sure.

Lots of other fun stuff planned for this, even though it's going to be a relatively tame engine, I still want to make it as good as reasonably possible. Ceramic coatings, highest reasonable compression ratio, modern rings etc. all the little bits add up and I don't want to get it finished and regret leaving something on the table.

Any input is more than welcome.

Hopefully soon I can get some pics posted.

I can't stand diesel smokers. They're the most annoying vehicles on the road, next to teenage girls on cell phones.

Getting 600hp from a 520+ ci FE won't take much, with a decent set of heads. Getting traction on the street may be another matter, however.  Sounds like it'll be an interesting ride, for sure.

Yea, hate the smoke, here in western Colorado everyone and their dos had a diesel, most of them running around swamping the cars behind them in a cloud of stinky black soot, cause that's cool for some reason. Really looking forward to shaming a few.

I am worried about traction, kinda why I think sacrificing some low end in favor of mid range might make it a little more fun to drive. I like frying the tires as much as the next guy, but too much wheel spin could get annoying real fast I suspect

As far as hitting the 600hp goal, I'm not terribly worried, there are a few similar builds on this forum and Barry's  that all seem to hit 600 without revving to high.

I'm excited to see what Blair has to say, I'm guessing a set of his heads, spec-ed for my engine, will give me much more than I am hoping for. I would rather hope for 600 and get more than to hope for 650 and get less, if you know what I mean.

Yeah, I gave up talking to the diesel truck guys.
"Yo man, my truck has the BIG cummins diesel."

Seriously dude, your cummins is pretty much a starter motor for the junk I work on.

Ouch, some anti diesel here....

The big three diesels will tow over the Colorado Rocky's with not a hint of smoke and the best built FE will only see tail lights. I run the 428's for 15 years in as many as 3 Ford trucks, then in 1990 I built an F-350 with a Cummins and never looked back. I now have 2 Dodge's and the Ford, all Cummins powered.

I do love my sled puller with the FE tho, Lol

I also happen to like diesel trucks.I find most of the ones belching out the black smoke are the Dodge guys who have turned it up.Most of them do it on purpose.I have had a 7.3 Ford and a FE F-250..There is no comparing them..
I lost the 7.3 in a brutal head on collision just over 3 years ago and was unable to find another so I went back to a gas truck...It just doesn't do it for me..The power and the mileage the diesel gets far out weighs the odd smell of fuel.

I am currently building something new...One of only 13 trucks built here in BC in the early 90's.Its called a Grizzly and this truck is truck #1.I am converting to 4wd and putting a 5spd in...Truck has 50,000 miles on a 5.9 Cummins...
I like my big block cars but I am diesel all the way in trucks.I plan on putting a Cummins in my Diamond T as well......JMO

Thanks...My first truck was a 71 Ranger 360 auto (circa 1990)..I always wanted to put a 69/70 Lincoln 460 in it with a 5spd.Saddly those trucks don't last long here in BC and mother nature already had a firm grip on it.By 1994 the truck was finished and I pulled the drivetrain and put it in a 73 F-250...I prefer the look of the bump sides tho.....nice looking trucks..

Nice rig!! Looks like a KW/Autocar combo. Is that a 1-ton sized or bigger?

Nick,
I'm pretty sure no one here is "anti-diesel."

If I was towing anything with any regularity, a diesel is the most sensible vehicle to use.  (I've owned many of them)  Heck I liked diesels so much I ended up dedicating my career to perfecting them.
What my (and presumably other peoples) issue is the guy that buys a $40,000 diesel 1 ton truck, jacks it up, turns up the fuel so any time they accelerate at all it belches out a massive cloud of black.  This truck typically doesn't tow anything except it's large testicles which hang underneath the tow hitch.  This truck also has a 5inch straight pipe so the turbo is heard constantly (extra credit points for a stack that comes through the bed).  Vehicle also contains a large ego, any vehicle that isn't like his just plain old sucks.  As a bonus factory option, there is contained a preprogrammed argument that pollution for no reason is pretty cool.
It's kinda the ultimate poser vehicle for the local mouth breathers that need to compensate for their lack of ability.

Going to try to upload a pic or two

This is my truck, the block I bought and the intake I want to use.
I also have Jays adjustable timing chain set, and I ordered his timing cover and intake adapter a few days ago, more photos to follow as the build progresses.

That's a slick looking bump-side Joey. Looking forward to seeing it come together. I've got a hood with a big ass hole cut in it if you decide to try that Trick Flow intake.  8)

Man, I hope it clears! If not I might take you up on that.

I got to put my hands on my intake adapter and timing cover last week, really quality work, thanks Jay!
I'm so excited about the intake, really fighting the urge to buy the trick flow R manifold just to set it on the adapter. I need to get the rotating assembly ordered first, so the machinist can get started on the block.
I'm kind of hoping someone will do a dyno test of that particular intake combo soon just to see how it works, if only there were someone out there who liked doing intake manifold dyno tests.... ;D
