FE Technical Forum / 427 street and strip tuning info from the 60's?
« on: March 02, 2016, 09:57:02 PM »
I have a nice collection of car mags from the 60's which have good tuning info on other makes of  cars and engine setups but not much on info on setting up the 427/425 combo for street or class racing.
Any of you have vintage info on what was done on the tune of these cars  for performance when they left the factory?
I do have one book but it is on the Tri Power 390 and 406 but not the '64-66 427 cars.

FE Technical Forum / The dual quad tune....
« on: February 29, 2016, 09:45:03 AM »
Just a quick update on my 427W project with the dual 1850's...
Started out with 64 jet in primaries and 68 secondaries with 6.5 PV and stock Idle Air bleeds with stock IFR's.
Found idle and off idle a bit rich with mild to hard accel. really lean.
Changed tune to .070 IAB with 67 primary jets... 8.5 PV and 70 jets in Secondary. Moved up to .031 pump squirtters and now have a 13.9-14.1 idle and seems to stay in that mid 13 area thru medium/hard acceleration. Engines likes the leaner idle better than my former Super Vic intake and 950 Holley.
Need to get my A/F indicator in a safer to glance at location for full power blast in 3 and 4th gear.
Pulls really hard when you hit it though! Also tried something different on the Vac. Secondary pots using the long yellow spring and replacing the check ball with a .040 restriction bushing which seems to work real well with weight of car and axle ratio.
Fun little street ride! ;D
How does this carb tune compare with some of you  427 FE guys using same carbs?
Again...thanks for carb info some of you shared!

FE Technical Forum / "L1/P1" camshaft for 1966 427 Fairlane?
« on: February 09, 2016, 07:20:22 PM »
Saw mention of this Ford camshaft that was used in Hubert Platt's 1966 427 Fairlane during drag tests for a good drag package setup. Haven't heard of that one before. Any specs on that cam?
This was mentioned in the new Ford Total Performance book.

« on: January 26, 2016, 08:27:05 PM »
Want to thank you guys that gave me some tips on setting up the carbs and general info on the FE setups.
Now if all this snow will melt away I can get on the road for more tuning.
Yeah I know it's not an FE 427 but the info I gained here was great!

Video of start up today.

Concerning the vacuum secondary setup...do you guys like the long yellow or short yellow spring and have you run with and without the check ball?
Setting up my carbs with the long yellow and modified the check ball spring seat with the "Phillips Screwdriver" peening tool to allow a bit more  vacuum flow.
Car weight is 3000 lbs. with manual trans and 3.50 gear.

FE Technical Forum / Vac. Secondary lids for dual quad setup?
« on: January 10, 2016, 09:55:07 PM »
Does Holley still make the correct looking lids? The ones I've seen as replacements have a tall boss on top that seems to have no purpose. They don't look like the ones that came on the carbs years ago.

New Holley lid from Summit Racing

Hi..new guy here and have a question on how the fuel distribution is on the factory MR intake manifold design?
Do the middle cylinders tend to run lean or rich compared to the end cylinders?
Thanks for any info.
