FE Technical Forum / Valve stem groove
« on: March 01, 2024, 10:23:54 AM »
I'm seeing some grooving on the valve stem.
REV valves and a 600 lbs spring and an Erson roller tip solid roller RV cam. 5 years and 10k mileage.
I'm going to a much lighter spring and a stock rocker and a solid lifter RV cam. ;D
Drive it for another 10k and they will be grooved and mushroomed. :o

FE Technical Forum / #2 Cam Tunnel Crack
« on: October 24, 2023, 03:07:16 PM »
This is a FE block I've had for a long time.
It has no date or 352 on it.
I have put 2 different sets of pistons in it and 2 different heads. D2's and CJ's. Real CJ's.
Couple of different cams and intakes.
I worked it hard. It might have come close to 400 HP near the end.
It crack at the #2 cam tunnel. Big enough to see just looking in.
They do crack. ;)

One night the Bear walked around the yard. You can see the 67 XL's quarter. ;D
I also got to make a pass at CFB Shearwater driving the XL.

FE Technical Forum / My rocker cover blew up.
« on: October 14, 2023, 01:56:05 PM »
I was testing my new fans and Air Fuel Gauge and the engine started making some noise (unusual noise) and then started smoking a lot.
I was very close to the garage so I got it home.
It looks like I have to take cover off the engine and see what happened.
Something with the rockers most likely.
Engine runs and oil pressure is good.
The fans work great. I also found out my temperature gauge is way off.
The Air Fuel Gauge is interesting. It goes up and down with the gas pedal.
Gas pedal goes down afg goes up then the engine speed starts to increase and the reading goes down.
Gas pedal goes up afg goes down on deceleration.
Steady speed it hovers around 12.5 to 13.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Rally In The Musquodoboit Valley
« on: October 02, 2023, 02:41:25 AM »
This is the 50th anniversary. So I went super early and got #1. Someone forgot to print the dash plaques.
And I went early for the plaque. ::)
I live in Musquodoboit Harbour so it is almost a local show. Great weather and over 400 cars. Most I've ever seen.
This was also the 5th anniversary of my 427 stroker running. I got the engine running a few days before
the show 5 years ago. Still running great. I did a 2nd gear burnout leaving the show today. Very happy.
I met Rory428 at the show. It was a pleasurer to meet him and talk FE's. He had his very nice 59 Meteor.
It also runs a very respectable time at Greenfield.

First off. All you peeps going to the FERR have fun and stay safe. :)
We are heading east. As far as you can for a car show on the mainland of North America.
Sherbrook Village Show and Shine. A two day event. It's an annual for us.
Oil check. Good to go.

FE Technical Forum / Another electrical issue
« on: September 03, 2023, 07:34:01 PM »
Really ::)
This time it is the dimmer switch. The "old" one 30 years or more. It was in the car when I bought it.
It looks like corrosion on the power terminal rivets. I bought the cheapest switch I could find.
The most expensive and the cheapest are both made in "you guessed it" China.

FE Technical Forum / Condenser failure?
« on: September 02, 2023, 07:12:54 PM »
On the first trip with the Loon e Bin the Pertronix failed.
This is our second trip with it. We went to the Belmont show in Belmont Nova Scotia.
The condenser failed. It was a NAPA Echlin FA82. Bought new 1 month ago.
I was just leaving the Shell station near home and started out to the highway.
The engine coughed at about 2500 rpm just putting along. Whoa?
I was close to home and thought about turning back. Nope, push on.

Near the Mastodon about 1 hour of driving it coughed again just a little.
I thought bad gas, maybe.

We are coming to Truro after about an 1 1/2 hrs of driving now. The interchange to go to the rest of North America is closed and detours a plenty. We were stopping for gas and late lunch in Truro and pulled off on a side road to go down to the town centre.
We are at an intersection in traffic and it starts coughing bad and shuts off. Ok.

Plan B
I waited until the temp gauge read 160*f and tried to start it.
No joy. damn
I went to the trunk and got the baggy of ignition parts I brought with me.
Installed the used condenser I took out of another ignition just before we left.
Got everything put away and go for start.
Fires right up. Happiness and joy.

I smoked the tires as I was leaving the show, I hope someone was recording. ;D

Condenser recommendations?

I know they look a little hokey, but this has to be the best mod I have ever done to my FB.
I can see everything behind me. I did a 3 point with the Loon hooked up. On a gravel side road. No helper.
I got lost.  ::)

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Towing the Loon e Bin
« on: July 10, 2023, 07:59:31 AM »
We took the Loon e Bin for a 5 day road trip to the Atlantic Nationals.
It was a blast. The 482 tows the Loon with ease. Pertronix let me down.
I put a new module for the trip. It failed the second day. Spent a night in a NAPA
parking lot waiting for parts. Switched to points and back on the road.
The car needs air shocks for towing. The Koni's are nice, but the tongue is pushing the
car down some and getting tire rub. Got some Hijackers on the way.

FE Technical Forum / That Old Black Cap
« on: May 18, 2023, 01:24:23 PM »
That old black cap. The pin has pushed out of the rotor and tip has wore into the brass contacts.
It took a few decades. I purchased a new MSD black cap and rotor.
The same thing will happen to the new cap and rotor if I live long enough.
The cap has been on my C2 for decades probably mid 90's. I remember buying it at Canadian Tire.
The C2 is my go to dist. It's adjusted and I use a steel gear. Mesh looks fine.
I believe the term here is "creep".
So I believe that it is now  "a creepy old black cap".
