Valve Covers.
« on: May 18, 2015, 04:12:44 PM »
The Fairlane is a tough one to get some of the kooler ones to fit.
But a Ranger Master Cylinder will.
This is a 1988 Ranger M/C that will bolt right in.
You need to get the rod out if you get one with the rod stuck in.
You pull it out. HARD! Your tools will not be the same as mine. ;)

Presto  changeo. Old rod in new M/C.
There is about 0.050" difference in length between the old and new.

This is a tall cover with the fins milled off. They are all about the same height so a small cut to the fins
will get you real close.

This is fitted with gasket in place. Works for me. I need the tall cover to use the rockers I have.

They come off and go on with no problem.

This won't work for the must look stock crowd, but ... :)

It's like you were reading my mind, I was going to post a reply this evening in regard to what covers you had and how the fitment was.  ;) My 67 has power brakes though so I have that darn booster to deal with as well.  ::)

Howie which covers are you using? On my dad's 67 he has Cobra Le Mans finned covers with an 87 ranger master cylinder-Dorman part# M39568 w/ 15/16" bore for manual disc/drum. We did not need to mill the covers and still have maybe just about a 1/16" clearance and yes, those push rods really put up a fight. :o

I probably did not explain this that well.
You do not have to machine the fins off. I machine the fins off because I don't like the fins.
They will fit on with the fins. But I would make a small cut to the one fin. Even just file the edge off would do.
It is pretty close to the plastic bottle. And does have a sharp edge.
They do go on and off easy though.
A pic of the finned covers in place.

Ok, I see. I noticed the master cylinder you used was cast iron. The one we used was aluminum. I don't know if there is much difference in the dimensions between the two, like the reservoir? ??? Good luck with the re-install.  ;)

I wish mine was alum now. There very well may be different sizes.
The 15/16" bore is really what you want though as you say. That should get your front brake pressure up into the 1400's psi.
I will be doing a full pressure test on the whole brake system. On the old system I had, I could get 1350ish psi with a good stab.

I'm curious what rockers you are using? The Harland Sharp rockers will fit under stock type CJ covers if the baffles are removed, and I thought they were about as beefy as any rocker made for the stock type shaft system.

By the way, those valve covers look sharp with the tops milled down. Nice job on the whole set-up.

I using a set of Erson's. I ran the CJ's for years on the Fairlane and it's time for a change. lol
I'm not sure if the Erson's even clear the CJ's. Maybe, but it was never in the plan for this go around. ;D

The Ersons do clear the factory CJ covers; I have run them that way myself.

My Erson's did not clear the factory CJ valve cover baffles.
I removed the factory baffles and made custom baffles and still it was close.

I believe it will, but as with any mod you have to test it.
You can do that a couple of ways.
You can use a pressure gauge at a wheel cylinder. Best way. Even then you have to road test.
Or just go out and using a lightly traveled road hit the brakes hard and see what happens.
An adjustable valve can help with dialing them in at the back so you do not get instant
rear wheel lock up.

I love those valve covers done that way.  Really awesome.

I will mention that in the past with that newer master cylinder, you might want to keep a few rubber grommets around for the plastic container.  I've split them before, and it's really hard to get just the grommet if you are in a hurry.

I bought a set of what were most likely 'Cobra LeMans' covers at Columbus some years ago that had had all the fins milled off and then had been bead-blasted to approximate the finish of the raw cast aluminum. In effect they're cast aluminum pent-roofs. I did have to make new baffles to have them fit the HD Dove rocker set-up.
