Fan shroud for 63 Galaxie 427
« on: December 26, 2023, 12:29:20 PM »
Hello,

I have a 63 1/2 R code Galaxie and I am going to be taking out the radiator and repainting it along with the overflow tank and when I put it all back in I also want to put a correct shroud on it. Car came to me without a fan shroud. Guy I know with the same car told me I needed a 2 piece (he said top and bottom) fan shroud. I saw it on his car but didn’t pay attention to the details or take pics (duh) and I have found that the top and bottom fan shrouds, even plastic repops, are impossible to find. I did pick up a shroud off ebay (see pic) that came off a 62 t-bird and I think it will work, but maybe I’m wrong. I see that I can also get brackets on ebay (assume I’ll need those) but other than that I’m not quite sure how the fan shroud attaches. I don’t see any drilled holes on the car for mounting the brackets. Thoughts?

I can't say for sure on the 63 1/2, but on my 66 Galaxie, the radiator has spots to use clip nuts and bolts.  This is the best pic I could find for an example.

If I am not mistaken, the only Galaxie's that had the shroud was A/C cars in 63.
The bottom half has long brackets that go back and mount on the same bolts for the bottom of the radiator. They bolt together in the center, but I can't remember how the top is attached.

Yes, all of these would be for AC cars with FEs. That’s why I think this shroud off a 62 t-bird with AC will work, provided I get the right brackets. I see from a catalog I have there is a the top/bottom kind made in plastic that says for 60-63 Galaxie but it doesn’t say it will fit anything besides 352 and 390 AC cars. Part number C3AZ8147. I’m on the waitlist for one of those, but of course I’d rather use original sheet metal if possible.

If it fits a 352 or 390 car then it will fit a 427 car. But you mentioned correct, and they will not be correct because 427 cars did not have A/C.

Yes, sorry. They came on cars with AC and also the 427 cars and maybe also the 406’s. I’m told its the same part.

The reason I mention that part supposedly only fits 352 and 390 is they also have a 1964 shroud that they mention will fit a 406. They don’t list any of them as fitting, or being correct for, the 427.

Well, I was wrong. That shroud I got off ebay wont work. I’ll have to meet up with my friend and find out the details.

Shouldn't need the shroud if everything is healthy. I thought I needed extra cooling in my G Code until currently.

I'm running a 4.25 stroke x 4.16 bore FE with 3x2 induction and cast headers, and once timing was sufficiently advanced it runs right at the thermostat's calibration at long idle, traffic or running down the two lane at speed in any ambient conditions.

This is with factory radiator, correct fan and spacer.

No issues.
