FE Technical Forum / Re: Warning against using ARP L19 rod bolts...
« on: August 22, 2021, 07:13:23 AM »
Yeah, I did the research when I bought the rods a while ago... It's something that crossed my mind.  I was aware of the handling precautions... That being said, if a rod bolt needs that much TLC to avoid potentially catastrophic failure, philosophically that's just a bit weird, in my opinion.  Good grief, this isn't a Space X Raptor engine for chrissakes. I wasn't planning on doing my build in a sealed, positive pressure clean room, surrounded by HEPA filters, bathed in UV light while wearing a bunny suit😂

Hmm...I have a set of Oliver rods with L-19 bolts for my new build.  Food for thought.

FE Technical Forum / Cam plug retention
« on: July 06, 2021, 09:49:51 AM »
The last time I installed a cam plug, I just ran a bead of RTV around it...I remember seeing a picture a while back of a plug that had a fender washer held over the edge of the plug by a screw that was drilled and tapped into the cam plug boss.  I can't imagine this is necessary, but I wanted to get some opinions...

I'd be curious about where you read that because I seriously doubt that's true.

I hear you on the safety issue... It's currently laying on my bench...but my wife and children have been known to repurpose my tools from time to time, and I would absolutely lose my shit if I walked into my shop to see it fallen over if I had it standing up!

Or is that an old wives tale?  If so, is it months, years, or decades?

I can tell you my reasons for a full undercar exhaust...
1.  Quieter.  If you've never driven a side pipe big block cobra, well, you need earplugs.  I have.  It's absurdly loud and that's a fact.
2.  I have kids.  It's safer.
3. It's classy.  That's just my opinion.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Canton Billet Oil Filter - Thoughts?

I used a Jomar non bypass filter for the break-in period on both of my FE builds... Seemed to make sense to me for that purpose.

Two years ago, I was out for a Sunday drive in my Cobra.  Ambient temp was warm, maybe 82.  About 30 minutes from home, my temp gauge started creeping up from its normal 180-190.  Naturally, I ignored that little voice in my head until it hit 205.  Just as panic set in, the temp shot up to 220 and I saw steam...I quickly pulled into an abandoned lot, not noticing a 3 foot diameter puddle.  It was not a puddle.  It wasn't a pothole.  It was a sinkhole over a foot deep and I crashed right through it.  The impact tore off the lower radiator hose, instantly dumping all the coolant.  Oh, and bending a rim.  My electric fan relay had burned out. Moral: listen to the little voice.

I have a cobra replica with a full undercar exhaust using Spintech rectangular mufflers.  Gotta be honest, I don't love them.  At cruising rpm, my car sounds like a UPS truck.  When it gets up in the revs, it sounds better.... Unfortunately, there's really not any good options given the real estate limitations.  Nonetheless, I'm considering doing something else in the near future... Not sure what yet though lol.

That's really healthy.  Congrats.  I assume the bore is 4.310?

FE Technical Forum / Re: Aviaid oil pan
« on: March 17, 2021, 03:59:02 PM »
I used as Aviaid pan about 10 years ago.  I really liked it.  I did use studs for the installation.  That may have helped.  I did make a rookie mistake of over torquing the nuts and dimpling the pan rail.  After a little remediation, it was fine.  Plan on using one for my new build as well.  An good cobra replica practically demands one IMHO.

That was incredibly interesting.  It makes you realize that the dynamics of the induction system up to intake valve of a NA engine is far more complex than it appears and that NA intake flow is a nearly endless series of compromises.  Any thoughts about the sharp turn on your crossram Jay?  Like he said, race engineers don't need to contend with packaging requirements like hood line.  Great video.
