H-pipe and how far back from headers

1969 mustang,4 speed,FE stroker engine, hooker headers,3 inch exhaust,GV. I installed a GV and I had to cut the old H-pipe to make room for the overdrive. I am wondering how far back from the headers I should install the new pipe. Thanks in advance.

The general rule of thumb is to do so as close to the collector as possible. I agree with this principle but in a mufflered car I really don't think it makes a lot of difference where it goes. JMO!

Not sure how scientific it is, but I have heard people shoot a bit of spray paint on the pipes, and then install at the location where the paint no longer burns off.

Yes, but that trick only works with open header engines equipped with slid-on or bolt-on collector extensions.
Using a wax crayon works even faster after drawing a long and wide horizontal mark on the extensions . After a few runs, the exhaust heat leaves a nice line literally showing one where to cut off the excess tubing. But with a muffled exhaust all bets are off.
