Oiling considerations
« on: March 04, 2014, 05:16:52 PM »
I'm building a '68 Mustang 'vert with a 390

I had posted engine details here:
http://fepower.net/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=1387.msg12033#msg12033

I want to stay with a stock appearance.  The car won't be seeing any track time, but the odd "spirited" driving.

My questions are:

Should I use a windage tray?  If so, which one do you recommend?
What oil pump is recommended?
Can I use the stock oil pan?
Should I overfill?

Yes use the windage tray.  A stock one or an aftermarket. Not sure if Ford is still selling the CJ tray, but Summit has
a good selection.
Use a Melling M57HV or the M57B oil pump. Both of these pump will read about 60 to 65 psi at 2500 rpm when hot.
If you want less on the gauge then use a M57 and it will read about 40 psi on the gauge.
I always use a M57HV and a heavy duty drive shaft.
You can use a stock pan, but not all stock pans are worth using. You want some slosh control and most FE oil pans have none.
In a stock pan you want 6 quarts and one in the filter for a total of 7 in the system.

Thanks much.

Are you aware of any superior pans that can be made to look stock when painted?

I found this one on Summit which I think would be fine when painted

Would I still need a windage tray, or ok with the internal baffles?

(apologies for the newb questions)

That's a good replacement for the stock pan, if you don't want to go with more capacity.  You should still use the windage tray, though.  Find one of the Ford ones if you can; they work well and are not that much money (used to be around $45).

Thanks Jay!

I ordered the Milodon windage tray as it wasn't that much more.

Another question - I wanted to use the chrome "powered by Ford" valve covers that came on the 390 GT's and Cobra Jets.  Does anyone know if they will clear the Precision Oil roller rockers & Shafts? Or do I need spacers?  If I do need spacers, will they still fit in a '68 Mustang engine bay or am I going to have issues with the shock towers?

Those rockers and end stands will clear the factory Cobra Jet valve covers, so I'll bet they will clear the chrome ones too.  Doubt that you will need spacers...

Yes, they clear the chrome 'Power by Ford' covers without need for spacers.

It will be interesting to see if the Milodon tray will fit.  Last one I had would not fit at all.  I have not tried one in several years after that - but I did tell them and maybe its better now...

Well, you called it. The rod bolts hit the louvers on the tray.  Not impressed.

Gotta be tough waiting like that Rob.  On the windage tray I'm going with Canton racing products part 20-938 screened, I've got it on good authority that it'll fit.  I'm mating that with a Milodon pickup and 7 quart deep sump pan.  I'll follow up, any issues I'll advise, should have the rest of the parts this week.

Yes Lenz it's a bit hard when you can't just drive back to the supplier and ask for a replacement but now that I'm part of the forum I can talk to people like yourself and avoid some of these situations.
