Title: SOHC Crate Engine On BAT
Post by: Autoholic on February 20, 2023, 02:07:24 PM
I didn't see this as having been shared yet. A SOHC crate engine was auctioned off on Bring a Trailer. It sold for $140,000.

It was shared earlier when the auction was live, but the post disappeared when the server issue happened a few days ago, and that was about the time the auction ended. Certainly newsworthy to share again.

I agree. BaT is the new auction house for the super rich. If any of you guys want to sell an awesome classic, BaT is the place to do it.

Doesn't need to be an awesome classic.  A big percentage of bidders on BaT have distorted their perceived value of the used car market.  If you want to sell a 1963 Dodge Dart, post it on BaT.  You may get 3x what it's worth.

It can be hit and miss though. I have seen some stuff sell for reasonable prices.  Considering a good percentage of SOHC's are still never run that is a silly price and the trickle down effect will extend to regular FE stuff.  IE:  people will want $2000 for an "SOHC" starter.

Last week, BAT would not list my 67 Fairlane NSS, Ryan Dowing tribute car because my reserve was too high and would need to come down.  I asked what they would accept as a reserve to list and got no response from BAT.

So, it's listed on Hemmings Classified now.

I saw that auction as well.  Any idea what the seller paid for the motor?  $50,000?  If so, he made a tidy profit.

I hear you on BAT.  I have an Italian sports car (72 Alfa Romeo GTV - track day build) that's headed to BAT in a few months.  Wish me luck!
