FE Technical Forum / Cobra Roadster transmission options these days?
« on: November 12, 2020, 08:59:19 AM »
I am wondering what the current manual transmission options are for use in an ERA Cobra Roadster.
This will be a street style Cobra, no scoops, no rollbar, no stripes...nothing S/C about it.
The engine will be an FE built with relatively mild specs and dressed to look correct. Probably in the 430HP and 480TQ range. Brent will be building this engine.
This will be a fun style Cobra that is mostly street driven, cruised, and beat on when the mood strikes.
I like the way the Toploader shifts and feels when set up right, but I would like to add one more gear to act like an overdrive.
The Tremec TKO600 is one option, but I have found them notchy and hard shifting compared to the Toploader.
This transmission should not require special modifications to the ERA Cobra to install.
I don't want to cut the car, or have the shifter in an odd place.
Undercar mods are not as much an issue.

Because I don't know everything...yet...I am seeking advice from the FE brain trust concerning what is currently available for such duty.

Thanks for any and all help.

I am trying to help an ERA Cobra owner find a good shop that knows its way around FE engines, and Cobra Roadsters.
He lives in Mequon, WI which is about 20 miles North of Milwaukee, WI.

A certified shop would be best, but an honest enthusiast who actually knows what they are doing is good too.

Thanks for any and all helpful information.

I have a 1990 F250 with a 7.3L IDI diesel as my daily driver. Recently the factory exhaust has come apart and I am in the process of fabricating a new exhaust...The Y-pipe is done, but it was a pain in the buttinski.

Anyway, as any good car guy does when he has the exhaust off the vehicle...he runs the motor to hear what it sounds like.

I have run the engine in two configurations now. Straight mainfolds only, and the Y-pipe with a short extension only.

I am completely surprised how relatively quiet the exhaust is.

With either, just manifolds, or just the Y-pipe, the exhaust sound is still not louder than the diesel itself at idle.

On a short drive I accelerated as normal and it is a bit loud after about 1/2 throttle, but only when accelerating. As soon as you get to a steady cruise speed it is not loud at all.

The straight manifolds are a bit more quiet than the Y-pipe but again, nothing even remotely close to my 428 or 289 with open headers. Not even 10% as loud as the gas engines.

I would have figured with the 22.5:1 compression ratio it would bark pretty well...But nope.

Learned something new today while building an exhaust.

Hello all. I may be delivering a car to someone who lives in Wisconsin. I am not a commercial transport business, and this is NOT my normal...First time actually, otherwise my trailer work has been personal 100%.
This would be a one time delivery due to current COVID19 closures and such.
My rig is a plain truck with a big box, plain, enclosed trailer. No logos, labels, stickers or anything like that.

Does anyone know if there are any odd things I need to be aware of if doing this kind of thing?

Thanks for any and all help with Wisconsin rules and regulations.

FE Technical Forum / Seems like too much gas smell from the carbs.
« on: May 01, 2020, 10:30:38 PM »
Hello all you happy people (using my best Droopy voice)
I am working on a dual quad 427FE in an ERA Cobra roadster.
BJ/BK carbs with one modification being the front carb has no choke plate.

There is no gas leaking anywhere.
I have no pull over at idle in either the primary or secondary.
Throttle blades are dry at idle.
Idle screws are out 1.125 turns.
Floats are currently set with just the slightest fuel tip out with the plug removed and me rocking the car.

Yet I am getting a pretty heavy gas smell in some situations.
I have looked for ANY signs of any fuel leakage, anywhere...None.
I am looking for fuel being pushed past the needle and seat but I find no evidence of that.
But there it is, heavy, raw gas smell.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any and all helpful suggestions.

Hello all.
I am wondering if anyone has ever used a Synchrometer (STE-SK or other) to help tune dual quad carbs? In this case BJ and BK carbs.
I am thinking, with an adaptor to cover the whole carb inlet, or just the primary inlets, this might be a good way to get both carbs in synch at idle.
Any thoughts.

Thanks and have a great, but 6 foot seperated, day.
