Title: 7* or 10* valve keepers for 3/8ths valves
Post by: GJCAT427 on January 16, 2019, 10:02:18 PM
New motor, TP heads with the correct valves and springs for the "D" cam. Which degree keepers would be best for the  .600 lift?

I prefer 10 degree retainers on any performance valvetrain - Jay

I think it is less likely that the keepers will let go under a valve float condition, if they are 10 degree rather than 7 degree.

If you visualize the keeper as a "collet" the 7 degree angle will clamp the valve tighter and be better for retention.  Issue and reason for the 10 degree deal was back "in the day" (70s/80s...) of aluminum retainers where the 7 degree would pull right through the retainer.  The 10 degree "fixed" that to an extent because it has a wider cross section - and it was easier to remove in service.

Eventually we all went to better retainer materials, but the 10 degree had become the industry standard by then.  There are arguably better solutions today including the so called "super 7" which combines the clamping of a 7 degree along with the wide cross section of the 10 degree.  Couple that with a radius groove and you have a good package that is probably only used at the higher levels of race building because normal guys ain't used to seeing it...

So 7* will have a better clamping effect? I gotta wrap this around my head. Too much going on today, Going to see Bob Seger and Grand Funk in concert in Buffalo tonight soooo my mind is back in the 70s. Aw the good ole days!

Yes, but with that being said, a 10° will hold over 1200 lbs open pressure with a bead-lock.  I've used some Super 7 stuff and some Mini 8 stuff, but to be honest, the 10° stuff works very well.

Good bands!  I envy you.....

Its 1 AM and I just got back from the concerts. Grand Funk was awesome and did a lot of the stuff that I grew up with. Seger was absolutely amazing. At 75 he was moving around like a 40 yr old.  His voice still sounds the same. He wound up doing 3 encores. Packed house and lots of us oldies doing dancing in the aisles!

Bob is really, really cool.

My wife teaches elementary music.  Had two of his kids as students.  Sent his kids to the regular public school with everybody else, no high dollar celebrity special place or special treatment.  He picked them up from school in a minivan and his wife sold bagels in the hallway during lunch.  As normal as anybody could ever possibly be.

She did have the unique experience of having Mr. and Mrs Seger in attendance, standing on their chairs in the back row after a Kindergarten/First Grade Concert screaming their approval with their lighters held up in the air....because their kids were in the show.  That my friends is a REAL rock star!
