Title: FT Heads
Post by: FElony on June 29, 2018, 12:33:54 PM
I have a pair that came off a 428 propane irrigation pump years ago. Is there a car/light truck use for these things that would be better than, say, a C8AE-H or similar? Like, super duper low end torque or something?

I don't think a D2 flows much more than a C8-H. Maybe a little. Good question for Werb.
But if the exhaust seats aren't too hammered, they may have some hardness left.

Edit: Wait a minute, I confused the D2 with the FT. You're talking center exhaust crossover, FT heads. The one set I've messed with had small ports, small valves. Like smaller than a C7-A. They were velocity oriented pieces. Meant to run at 4000 rpm max. Might wheeze out 400HP with some rubbing. And the FT intake has to come along too. Or lead the crossovers shut.

Main market for those things is where they came from, medium truck and industrial use. Still a few trucks running around with them, probably more industrial stuff. My neighbor's shop builds all the FTs for the frost protection wind machines in the valley, so he's always looking for 361-391 cores, but value is not high. He also converts them to propane, the kits aren't expensive. I would put them on cl and see if you get any bites, keep renewing the ad

Your assumption is correct, comrade. With all the Russian crash videos I watch when I'm bored, suka blyat has become part of my vocabulary. Are you a KGB defector, perhaps?

Thank goodness you cleared that up. I thought you had gone bonkers.

Yes, that was my thinking, that the smaller valves and ports might work in a low rpm towing situation even better than C8 or D2, say from idle to 4000. With propane use, I'm willing to bet that the condition of the valves/seats is pretty darn good. I'm not sure where the intake is.

Nope, no KGB defector, sorry.  Just an ex-pat living and working in Ukraine, and it caught my attention seeing someone use words like that here.  Those car crash videos are the best!  I especially like the ones where the bums stagger up to a car stopped at the light in an intersection, flop onto the hood, then try to claim they were hit while crossing the street.  Well, those and the tanks driving 50 MPH and going right across the road in front of the cars.  There's a lot more in that one than just a bit of "syka blyat" ;D.  Oh, and the vodka over here is outstanding!

The capacity of Russians to create a collision where one could not exist makes me wonder what in blazes is going on between their ears. Everyone is Speed Racer (especially in the snow), everyone passes on the left (wrong side of the road), pedestrians who should be aware of their mortality step in front of anything that moves without looking (and drag their children with them unto death). You see drivers looking straight at another vehicle and decide to ram them instead of using the brakes. And don't get me started about those terribly designed intersections that allow three-wide left turns in both directions.

It's like they are another species on another planet. Insane. However, I do like imitating the cursing as closely to the accent as possible. It is my firm belief that genetics gave all the men the exact same voice. Same with women. I call all male and female drivers Boris and Natasha. Those hilarious insurance drunks are all Ivan. Women who get hit crossing the street are all Petra. You can imagine my endless vocal commentary when I watch that stuff.

I think there's millions to be made making this a weekly show for American TV. Maybe the Fox Network. Think of the profits from pay subscriptions to view aftermath carnage! I could certainly land the job of TV host for that. Hell, I have years of experience already. Comrade FElonivitch presents "Adventures in Russian Carsport". Brought to you by Blyat Burgers. Made with bear meat, of course. Free vodka for children under 12.

Do they drive this way in Ukraine, too? How can you be an FE fan there? Do they allow Imperialist vehicles? I mean, wehicles?

Had one years ago. Sold it. Probably a very good match. I have lots of stock iron, though, including a couple T intakes. I'm building a torque monster in my head. You know, something you can throw into an old F-250 with a granny gear and pull a bank down the street with. Why a bank? Well, it seemed reasonable at the time.

I think one SNAFU Factor in Russian trafic is the Vodka. ;D Both driver and pedestrian
It is a papermill and a harbour a few miles from me. So in the 80s the russians was
able to buy cars and ship them home on their ships.
I sold a few cars to russian sailors and to put i nicely...they are not born drivers
stupid as i was i let the first buyer test drive and i rode with him, big misstake :o :o
First he started to chatter, noski wroski.mokba wroska  pointing to the floor
I like what the hell is you talkin about? Twoski petalski, twoski petalski
He had never seen an auto trans ::) Well i got out of that alive but i had my doubt i admit
Next day he and his buddys showed up in the car with a jute sack with Vodka bottles
And gave it to me...you show us more cars we buy.So i sold a few they had only a couple of hundred bucks each
I thought they was in their 50s  marked by a hard live a few rotten touth in their mouths
All of them was in their early 30s  :o I guess the life in a socialistic paradise wasnt that good

It's the same in Ukraine.  Half the "Russian" car crash videos are actually Ukrainians.  Part of the problem is vodka, but not as often as you might think.  They actually enforce the DWI laws very strictly in both countries, and there's no allowance for any alcohol at all in your system if you're driving.  If you're the driver in an accident, they 100% will test you for alcohol, and they will lock you up if you've been drinking.
A bigger problem is that they literally don't know how to drive.  During former Soviet times, most people, especially in the cities, never owned a car and never learned how to drive.  Everybody took the bus or the trolley.  In the 80's, the  import laws started to loosen up and people started buying anything they could in the West, to take back and resell.   When the Soviet Union broke up, it became a free-for-all.  Everybody wanted a car, but cars were scarce.  There was no used car market because everyone that had a car wanted to keep it.  This is when you get like what Heo was saying, about guys going to the West and buying whatever they could.  It didn't matter if the car was a beat up piece of crap.  If it ran, they could sell it back home, usually at a major profit.
On top of that, nobody had a driver's license; there was no need for the average person to have one.  Once the republics became independent, people started wanting to get a license.  The easiest way to get one (and still is, by the way) was to just go to the driving school, make a "donation" to the instructor, and he would sign off on the paperwork so you could get a license.  So, there's lots of people on the road who literally just don't know how to drive.
It's the same with the traffic in the cities.  The cities were never designed to handle large numbers of cars, and drivers treat traffic laws like suggestions.  That's how you get stacks of cars in the intersections, all trying to turn left.
Even given all that, I still can't explain what you see on those videos.  Every day I'm on the road, it's an adventure ;D.  They do just run into each other, sometimes it's like watching bumper cars, but in real life.  It seems like every time I'm on the road, I have at least one "WTF did he just do?" moment.

Wow, thanks for the insight! I understand a little better, but they are still all crazy. I'm sure you have your personal reasons for moving there, and I'm not going to pry, but for heaven's sake import a Super Duty and put really really big bumpers on it. Put a sticker on the back that says "съесть это, Борис". Come to think of it, why do we never see Yankee/Jap pickemup trucks there?

A set of FT heads on the FE cars over there would lessen the carnage a bunch. Hard to do much damage at slow speed.

Nyet. You underestimate the power of Boris and Natasha, comrade Postumova. Destruction in parking lot is bountiful.

Felony, Your FT headed towing motor sounds neat, I saw an S.P.2.P ( hope i got that right...... ) on fleabay the other day for like $150.
A performer ( not RPM ) might be a good choice as well.

I always thought the FT exhaust manifolds were WAY  better than the stock truck Log offerings. The FT manifolds look a lot like the classic Chevy Rams horn. Gotta deal with the cross over, but thats not a huge deal.

Propane can be hard on valve guides, we had a costumer when i worked up in wyoming, he worked for the propane company, they all got propane for free basically, so most of them had converted their truck to run on it.

He came in about once every 2 months, had several boxes of pushrods behind his seat. We would pull the valve covers off his 460, pull the pushrods out and replace all the bent ones. Usually about half the intakes were bent. It was a pain in the ass for him but he didnt care, he was saving a ton of cash not having to buy gas for that smogged out turd of a 460.

I may have a line on a natural gas FT361. I was thinking"old hot rod" with center dump manifolds, and a Jay Brown intake adapter to block the exhaust cross over, and a Cleveland performer intake. Make a Rod cruiser with overdrive... 1500 rpm at 70 would be my goal.

I still run an FT in a '58 F-600 service truck and yes it has preety goot torque (best Russian accent) but...
after having had a variety of FE and FT engines in this truck over the last 30 years,  the very best one with the most torque and power was an out of the box mid-sixties 4-V 390, but it was just too much "zip" with those low gears. First gear was done in about two seconds, and the crankshaft would not hold up to the continuous low rpm duty. As it is I have indeed broken a steel crank through the center main, go figure.
Having said that, this 391 has towed home dead fully loaded gravel hacks (transfers) at 80,000 lbs. That combined with the weight of my truck is 90,000lbs (there's your bank!) and the 391FT does it just fine. Not fast though... It will not really run over 4000 rpm, with a bit of a cam in it the max torque at about 1900. The factory cam is pathetic, with max torque (not much) at 1600.
These things are significantly de-rated.

There is more than one head and valve combination on these FT's, the true heavy duty engines have (7/16?) sodium filled exhaust valves about the size of a thimble $$$. The "medium duty" or " industrial engine" uses the same same size valves with a more conventional stem dia. (I have a propane 2V-428 with these heads)

C6AE, How do you think an FT would run with a 427 marine cam? I`m brain storming a build For a 56 COE tower.

Look how freaking cool this ride is. Don't know if I'd shorten it 10 feet or make a car transporter out of it. Nearby.

C6AE, How do you think an FT would run with a 427 marine cam? I`m brain storming a build For a 56 COE tower.

I think it depends on your intended use, the FT's have pretty low compression and really heavy pistons, crank and clutch etc. I think any more cam than my grandmother's 352 station wagon would be just wasting fuel. The truck engines are all about low rpm continuous duty and need a powerband between about 500-3000 rpm. Mine is always pulling a grade lugging my tools and welder etc to some remote job site and is working at WOT at 1500-2000 rpm for several minutes at a time. In fact it settles down and pulls quite well at that speed. Out on the highway I run it at 3000-3500 but that is not it's main use.

Edit; I do use a car distributor (Pertronix) with my own curve in it and a cheap 650 vacuum Holley w/manual choke.
Distributor is about 25° crankshaft degrees mechanical advance starting from 10° initial, coming in at 1000 ending at 3500,  the vacuum advance adding about 15° more until the vacuum drops below 15"Hg then it's out. There is no governor, if I was to let an employee drive it I would definitely fit an electronic governor.

I've had to scrap every FT head I've had.  No one would buy them, even really cheap or free.  Some of the heads were freshly rebuilt.
