65 comet
« on: December 22, 2014, 10:05:47 PM »
i am looking for a kit to remove the shock towers so i can make some real headers that breathe. and possibly install a manual rack and pinion and get rid of the factory steering parts which i believe is heavier than a manual rack and pinion. does anybody make this kit for a comet?

AJE makes a kit for early shock tower Fords that esentially replaces the front suspension and steering with a FOX Mustang design, using struts and coil overs that attatch to the top of the shock tower, but you can trim away most of the lower sections, and the Fox rack and pinion, or optional Pinto rack. Looks pretty slick to me, and I think its gotta be a better system that a Mustang 11setup.

We did a complete RRS (Australia) front & rear suspension installation here a while back on a customer's '67 Mustang.  Our's had a bolt in strut deal in front that replaced the upper control arm, but still used the shock tower structure.

I think the RRS is using Aussie Falcon parts whereas the AJE uses the much more available (in this hemisphere) Fox body Mustang parts. Something to consider if you want to replace anything later.  The towers can be trimmed way back with either setup, you only need the top part to hold the struts.

i really like the rrs stuff from australia.  but i have emailed, tried to call and i get no response.  are they still in business?  also 1 thing i like about their stuff is that they have to be an engineer in australia before it is acceptable to use,   per their laws.

If they are the same as 90% of the other businesses around here mate, they are probably closed for the Christmas break. I would try back on the 5th of January.

the assembly that fatman makes is a nice piece and not very expensive for what you get.  but it sure look like its going to add more weight to the front end as opposed to the factory parts that i would have to take out.  just my opinion

I have the Fatman strut conversion in my 69 Shelby clone.  I would never, ever, buy it again.  As delivered it reduced the front wheelbase by something like 4", and the quality of the kit was not very good.  I'd suggest you steer clear of that one.

I have an R&C Motorsport MII front suspension(w/coilovers) on my '65 Mustang that has a stroked 427FE in it. I really like how it mounted in and they had very good instructions. When I called them they were very helpful and knowledgeable. Plus, I didn't just talk to an "order taker", it was the owner that answered the phone! I haven't gotten the car finished yet so I can't comment on how it handles/drives. Maybe next year.  ::)

when i bought this car previous owner put the crites front shocktower kit in it.   crites makes very nice stuff,  but in this kit crites make headers to fit also.  and they do fit good, but,  they were made just to fit the car and they are all no where near the same length.  which is important.  that r&c front end i looked into and i like it because it eliminates the shock tower completely.  im not going for handling at all because its strictly a drag car,  i just want to transfer more weight to the back, plus make some real headers.  that rrs kit from australia is really nice i like the coilovers and also the shock tower trim piece it looks like it makes a whole lot more side engine clearance as oppsed to crites.
