Duraspark II Green/Blue Compatibility
« on: February 25, 2014, 09:11:10 AM »
Found a good deal on a green grommet. Plan to have a back up for my blue grommet. Reading conflicting post seems green requires a ballast resistor others say it is a good replacement for red, no resistor. Others say 1977+ red is the best. My dealings with Duraspark are blue, black and converting the Variable Venturi to Holley and blue box. With all of this said is green compatible with blue.
Thanks, Chris

I can't offer any info on the Green grommet box...in fact I didn't even know it existed until now.  I will say the Red box and a TFI coil for me so far has been great and it is not a direct plug and play replacement with blue.  I'd get in touch with Dave (screenname psig) over on the FordMuscle Forums.  He is quite knowledgeable with the differences between the different flavors of Duraspark.

Well Thanks , But although I am Good with the Dists I am NOT an Expert on the Boxes , I would rather use the GM 4 pin Module with the duraspark , Or better Yet a MSD 6al ( or equiv ) I am a Ford Guy , BUT I am also smart enough to use other Brands/ Technology , IF Its an Improvement or as good for less Money  8)

Found this in my FE data base.

Red - Duraspark I (California cars 1977, California 302 V8 only, 1978-1979)
higher output, considered the module to use back in the '70s and '80s. Does
not employ a balast resistor. Senses current flow through the coil & adjusts
dwell for maximum spark intensity.

Blue - Duraspark II (49 state 1977, 50 state 1978 and later)

Yellow - Duraspark II with "dual mode" (except 1981)

White - Duraspark II with "cranking retard"

Brown - Duraspark III and other EEC controlled systems

Yellow - universal ignition module (1981)

Green - early solid state ignition (pre-1977) similar to Duraspark II, but
never popular for retrofitting, probably because the Duraspark I was
superior.

I read that one but it does not say compatible. As mentioned in this and other post the red seems to be the better factory application. Thanks
