Anyone ever blown up a FL1A RACING Oil Filter?
« on: May 07, 2021, 03:31:40 PM »
I'm pumping about 100lbs of oil pressure at 6200 RPM.
Got the Racing filter because I don't trust the Ford regular FL1A filter at these pressures.
Does anyone have any knowledge of a Racing ford filter blowing up? (Ford Racing Product)
Thanks

100 P.S.I. should not be a problem with the FL1HP properly installed units.      ;)

But they will, if not properly installed or with higher pressure sums, but they still don't generally "blow-up", but rather in my experience the filter body is pushed away from the block causing the sealing gasket to be dislodged along with an amazingly great amount of oil expelled at pressure.     :o

Some 20 yrs back, I ran a HP spring in a HV pump.  I had to put a 200# pressure gauge in my truck.  It would go 150+ at start up.  Never blew a filter all summer.  I did tear it back down and replace it with a shimmed stock spring for 80+ of oil pressure.

I've seen them swell at 120 psi because of a stuck relief valve.

I've never pushed more than about 75 into a FL1-A.

If you have a used one squeeze the shell to see if it has the beer can feel of the standard filters.I do know that the older fram and purolator HP filters along with some baldwin filters did have a shell stamped from thicker metal and wouldn't squeeze in like the regular ones, that would also allow a stronger crimp onto the base.If the Ford racing unit is like that I would expect it to handle more pressure.

I have a 428 that came “built” in a car I have that I raced for many years. It had 120+ psi cold, and about 90 psi at idle hot, which would climb to 120 psi on a pass. Because of the high oil pressure I always ran a Motorcraft FL-1HP filter, and never had an issue. No ballooning or deforming. That engine has since been replaced by a different 428 that has more sane oil pressure, but I’ve kept using the FL-1HP filters for many more years and still never an issue. The FL-1HP filters feel like they have a thicker shell, and definitely have a thicker base. Maybe next time I cut one open I’ll measure the shell thickness. They’re definitely a little heavier.

I've had an FL1A split at 110-120 pounds.  I found the K&N filters to be much more durable.

With oil pressure that high, I would be concerned about the 1/4" oil pump drive breaking or getting twisted. Even the larger diameter aftermarket HD drives, still only have 1/4" hex ends. Just seems like an excessive amount of oil pressure, not to mention the HP that much oil pressure wastes. I have always ran regular FL1A , WIX, or Purolator oil filters, and never had any filter issues, albeit with more normal oil pressures.

The FL1A is the standard filter, not the same as the HP version,I've got no complaints about the K&N"s except that some places seem to be pretty proud of them the end hex is handy for removal.I've heard that the wix  51515R is a good filter too but never used one,I plan to try them out though.

Engine masters just did an episode on oil filters, pretty interesting stuff on there, definitely worth a watch.

I weighed both filters and the FL1AHP is 1/2 pound heavier than the standard FL1A.
Thanks for replies.
