Not that I want to disparage our friends in the south, but what are the chances that someone perhaps made a new VIN plate? Forgeries are a fact of life in all forms of high priced collectables. I don't know, but I image it would be possible.

It's been verified in person by Kevin Marti. It also had modifications still in the trunk and chassis that were specifically for the filming, and not something that would be easily replicated.

It is likely true then.

I do note that some really reputable experts have been duped. One great example is the Getty kouros - bought by the Getty museum in 1995 for $9 million and allegedly made in 530 BC, it is now widely considered a fake although many experts verified it at the time. One of the arguments was you couldn't fake the patina - that the chemical process that altered the surface of the stone took centuries, until a chemist showed it could be done.

I understand that Kevin has verified the car but....I don't buy it.The door tag is questionable and the stamping(the numbers are rolled on at Ford, not stamped) on the inner fender is all wrong..The windshield tag doesn't look great either but nor do the originals..I am not convinced.....

Upon researching this, how do you know they were rolled on? I'm finding info that says they were stamped in 1967.

Where did you see a picture of a dash VIN tag?

There is a huge thread on this car on the vintage mustang forum (lost car found)Here is a pic of the inner fender #'s..Does not look factory..
I have been too busy to sit and read the whole thread but I saw the pics of the welded towers (BB cars) and it is way too nice to be done at the factory..

Call me skeptical too. Too many folks just want this to be true, clouding any objectivity.

It's just way too convenient to have been 'found' so close to the original's anniversary. Hey, it's not a factory lightweight nor a LeMans/NASCAR/IMSA/NHRA winning car either.

The VIN stamp on my 68 Shelby doesn't look anything like that one...

Agreed....the original inner fender on my 68 was destroyed by the previous owner in 77 but my 67 has 3 inner fender stampings and the 66 also has 3..They don't look anything like that.I also don't like the door tag.It just doesn't look right..
My 68 was built 2 weeks before the Bullitt cars at the same plant...I am just not buying this story..

So you guys doubt Kevin Marti's abilities to correctly verify a vehicle's authenticity OR his ethics behind his inspections? Remember guys, this supposedly was a movie car. Chances are, this Stang did not conform to many aspects of the regular production Mustangs by the time they got done screwing around with it. What if it was damaged and then repaired? This would account for things not following factory spec.

I am not focusing on Kevin Marti...I am questioning the evidence. As a owner of a car which is very close to being a sister to the bullit cars I am questioning the inner fender stampings and the door tag.
I am very skeptical  about this and feel they are only giving us the details/news that they want us to hear (like most things in life)
