Engine Builder Mag Article
« on: January 15, 2016, 01:25:55 AM »
I've been reading this publication online for a couple of months now after I stumbled across it. Lots of very interesting tech articles and a great way to learn more if you aren't a seasoned engine builder and even if you are, it's aimed at shop owners. I ran across an article where they compared carbs and EFI on a FE. Not sure if it was done by anyone on here, but the link is below.

Ha!  I started reading this article and the first thing I came across was this quote:

"After receiving the pushrods and installing them, one thing we realized is that the top of the pushrod holes in the head had to be chamfered."

The pushrod holes aren't in the head, guys... ;D ;D ;D

"The pushrod is a small component of the engine, but it plays a very important role."  ??? ::)  Go figure.

No mention of the type of heads, the cam, what stroke & bore? And the engine lost torque AND horsepower with the EFI, across the board? AND I still think that 650 was too small to feed that engine. Lots of goofy stuff in that article, with very little tech info that is usable, except of course that the pushrod seems to be a valuable part of an engine...lol

Normally their articles appear to be up to snuff, so don't let this article bias you about the publication. Even Road & Track sometimes publishes something that either doesn't make sense or is batshit crazy. Dive into the tech articles and you'll probably find something useful.

I agree. I've read their articles on and off for years and have enjoyed them. I was involved with a back to back fuel injection setup to carb and ignition module test on a performance v-twin and the difference was around 1%. Never took the intake temp difference as a positive for the carb team though. But I have added a fogger injector in a plenum to make up for a deficiency in injector choice and it worked out great. Makes sense.
