Standard Distrubutor Use with Mirror 105 Block.
« on: March 08, 2019, 08:50:56 PM »
On the 105 mirror block will it require a bushing at the oil pump drive shaft for use with a standard FE distributor?

The only "105" blocks that need the bushing in the block for the lower section of the distributor shaft (not the drive rod itself) are the 361-391 FT truck blocks. I THINK the lighter duty 330s use the same distributor as a FE, not positive about that, or what the MD330 uses. All the factory "105" blocks used in PU trucks have the standard size hole in the block, so no bushing needed. Assuming that you will not be using a FT oil pump and 5/16" shaft and distributor, right?

I have a D4TE-1 391 block that came out of a dump truck. I got the bushing from Doug at POP. It DOES require a light hone afterward to fit the distributor shaft properly.

It's likely a standard truck block, not an HD. I had core shift and I am going to save the OE block and run another to beat on. I remembered reading about the O/P drive bore being different.

Nowadays, the split bushings are hard to find.  I don't like pressing a solid bushing into the block.  It is possible to break that casting there, rendering a costly fix or a junk block.  I have been using an old valve guide.  An 11.2 mm drill bit and a light hone.....press it on the distributor shaft after the gear is put on.  I make the OD about .510, and part it off about .900 long.  After press, it ends up .5128 or so.  Fits just right, and you have a magnesium-bronze bushing for the pilot.  Works good, and no block worries......

I (also) have been pressing a sleeve on the distributor shaft. A bit of lathe work, a light press (like 1/2 thousandth) and drop of red loctite, done.
(used both plain steel and solid bronze bushings, whatever was handy and neither has been a problem. The original shaft is just plain steel running in the cast iron bore)
